Section VI boys soccer had a season for all time : Sports : The Buffalo News
The honors keep rolling in for Michael Lumley, a senior forward at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.
Lumley was selected as the national Player of the Year by the Deafsportzine, a Web site run by Barry Strassler, as well as the co-Player of the Year by the National Deaf Interscholastic Athletic Council.
St. Mary’s, which has just 14 boys in its high school (entire enrollment is 110), has had three prior Deafsportzine Players of the Year: Mike Barreca (1995), Erik Sukiennik (2001) and Anthony Baskin (2003).
There are approximately 16 schools for the deaf with soccer programs in the country.
Lumley, also a basketball standout, is a native of the East Side of Buffalo and a residential student at the school at 2253 Main St. He finished his career with school records for goals in a season (28) and career (78); the previous records of 26 and 76 were held by 2000 graduate Rusty Ormsby.
He also earned All-American honors along with senior goalkeeper David Wantuck.
