Couple Was Driving To Hospital In March When Pulled Over For Speeding

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Jacksonville man was ticketed while he was driving his pregnant wife to the hospital in March.

So what has happened to him since then?

Kyle and Rachel Nordman said a Jacksonville Sheriff's officer ticketed them for speeding as they rushed to get to the hospital when Rachel was in labor.

Channel 4 first interviewed Kyle seven months ago while his wife was still in the hospital.

At the time, his wife, Rachel, was pregnant with their second child, and at 20 weeks, her water broke.

Her doctors told her to get to the hospital -- fast.

They didn't live far from one, so the Nordmans decided to drive themselves. On the way, they got pulled over on Kernan Boulevard, where the speed limit is 30 mph.

Kyle got a ticket for going 39 mph.
"I don't deny that we were speeding. We were in a panic," Rachel said. "But as soon as we told him about the emergency situation, he should have responded as such, and he didn't."

The Nordmans said their beef is with the JSO officer who took his time writing a ticket instead of attending to their emergency.

Kyle went to court and tried to fight it, but in the end wound up paying.

"Actually, the morning my son was born, I ended up going into court about two hours later," he said.

Time has passed, and the Nordman's son, Cidro -- whose name in Spanish means "strong gift" -- was born. He came three months early and didn't even weigh 3 pounds.

"I say he was three months premature, and they say no way," Rachel said.

But despite all the problems in the beginning Cidro's a happy, healthy baby now.

The Nordmans said after all they went through, they've reached a dead end with law enforcement and are unhappy with the way it all turned out.

But Cidro makes them feel a whole lot better.

JSO began an internal investigation in June into the actions of the two officers involved following the Nordman's complaint.

Both officers claimed they were never told Rachel Nordman was pregnant or that she needed medical attention.

They said Kyle Nordman only said they were on their way to the hospital.

In July, the Nordmans received the results of the internal investigation, which read in part, "The investigation produced no evidence to support your complaint. The member's actions were legal and proper under the circumstances surrounding your complaint."
