A man told a jury how his deaf brother died in his arms shortly after he was shot.
Angel Rodriguez testified that he and his brother, Joe Rodriguez, had gathered with some other people on July 10, 2005, outside an apartment complex on the city's West Side, where a man was waving a gun.
The gunman, Jesus Trevino, was apparently angry with his girlfriend and fired his gun at the crowd, police said.
Angel Rodriguez told jurors that he then tried to alert his brother about the danger, but couldn't.
"I couldn't tell him to turn around," Angel Rodriguez said. "He was trying to get away when he shot at us and hit him in the back of the neck."
Joe Rodriguez died moments later, Angel Rodriguez said.
Trevino fled the scene and was arrested two weeks later.
If Trevino is found guilty, he could face a maximum of life in prison.
