A Shakopee man who spent two months in jail after being found with white powder has been cleared after tests showed the powder was deodorant, not cocaine.

Thirty-one-year-old Cornelius F. Salonis was arrested Aug. 3 for allegedly driving drunk. He was jailed after police said they found cocaine in his car.

Salonis' attorney blames a faulty field test for the false result. Richard Hillesheim says a state crime lab concluded the powder was deodorant.

Prosecutors dismissed the felony drug charges Wednesday and allowed Salonis to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving.

He was sentenced to a year in jail. But the judge stayed nine months of the sentence and removed another month for good behavior. So with the two months he already served, Salonis was freed.

Far out. I have to wonder why did it take 2 months to do a test on a deodorant that was once thought for cocaine?

This is really twisted.

I am really surprised he spent so long in jail. I also did not know you could get sentenced to a year in jail for drunk driving.

There is no excuse for him to spend two months in jail while the police have every chance to re-test it on a different field test kit. Also I wonder why they did not smell deodorant whose smell is so different from cocaine.

You brought up a good point. I was wondering the same thing too.

Also, The texture of cocaine and deodorant are different. With the cocaine, it is more like a powered sugar texture whereas the deodorant texture is more of flimsy, and tactile.

Exactly. Unless the cops saw the white "powder" on his nose, they may overreact.

Sometime deodorant can be wear out. But obviously, he use deodorant too much. :hmm:

Which deodorant did he have in possession that made them suspicious of him?

Shakopee is 10 miles from my home! It could have happened to me...:Ohno:

Just think of TV commercial about AXE deodorant......

At the end of commercial, the warning label will say 'WARNING: SNIFFING DEODORANT COULD GET YOU ARRESTED!'

:laugh2:

That'd be bad enough if that man actually had the AXE and sniffed it up!

Truth be told, I have no idea which deodorant he had in his possession. I tried to google it up to see if I could come up with the answers. :dunno:
