Man fined for punching deaf-mute commuter on bus

A deliveryman was fined $2,000 today for punching a deaf-mute man in the eye twice on board a bus. He was also ordered to pay $300 as compensation to the victim, reported The Straits Times.

The incident took place on April 9, 2011 on board an SBS Transit bus.

Chia Boon Teck, 50, had boarded the bus with his wife and 16-year-old daughter along Jurong West.

The victim, Mr Low Koon Huat, 56, later boarded the bus at Boon Lay market, and sat in front of Chia's daughter.

Chia told the court that he punched Mr Low, a production operator, twice because he was angry with Mr Low for repeatedly turning around to look at his daughter.

The Straits Times reported that Chia smelled strongly of alcohol when the police arrived at the scene.

During sentencing, a second charge of repeatedly shoving the bus driver was also considered. Chia has previously been convicted for outrange of modesty and insulting modesty.

Chia could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for causing hurt.
