WNYT.com - Man arrested for setting woman on fire

SCHENECTADY - Police announced an arrest Thursday afternoon in the case of a woman set on fire in Schenectady.

Thirty-eight-year-old Kevin Boone is charged with first-degree assault. Police say he set fire to 40 year-old Amy Gilroy Wednesday night on Albany Street.

Gilroy was rushed to Albany Medical Center. She was transported late Wednesday night to the burn unit at Westchester Medical Center. There is no word on her exact condition.

Many neighbors are shocked. Joshua Jones was visiting a friend and says he was there on his friend's porch when it happened.

"Yeah, I actually saw the woman on fire screaming," Jones said.

Police say after an argument, Gilroy was doused with something flammable and set ablaze.

"We heard her yelling for help. That's when everyone started yelling, saying there's a lady on fire. No one knew what to do. So we called the cops," Jones recalled.

Another neighbor who didn't want to be identified says he was able to get a closer look at Gilroy after the suspect took off.

"I got close up where you could see the whole side of her face. She was pretty red. She was pretty burnt and crisp," the witness said.

Police say they're getting a lot of help from witnesses.

"We did get cooperation from neighbors. They all seem pretty angry. It's a disturbing crime. Horrific to look out your window and see someone on fire," Detective Kevin Green said.

It's still not known exactly what the argument was about that police say led to the attack.

Police are holding Boone in custody until his appearance before a City Court judge Friday morning.

That's a pretty brutal thing to do to a human being. :shock: If she recovers from this, her recovery will be quite painful if her nerves haven't been destroyed.
 
Horrible....the smell of burnt flesh is one of the worst smells. My g'father was in a house fire and got his legs burned up pretty bad. The stench (smell) was awful!
For someone to set another on fire....it's pretty evil!

that douchebag should be charged with attempted murder instead of first degree assault
 
The only punishment that could fit the crime is to trap the man in a burning house but not kill him. Let him experience the horror of possibility getting burned alive.

I think Sara was expressing shock when she said "oh really", kinda another way to say "wow!"....I find her hard to understand sometimes myself. But I have heard others say "Oh really?!" with a shock on their faces. So, that's what I am assuming.
