Making music... the deaf trio - Halifax Courier

A TRIO of deaf musicians are tuning up ready to take the stage.

Percussionist Mark Owens, guitarist Mohsin Ahmed and cellist Jake Lamb, all from Halifax, are part of the eight-member Hi-Notes ensemble.

They are now counting down the days until they play at the Northern College of Music in Manchester in a special concert organised by charity Music and the Deaf. Danny Lane, from the charity, said: "Deaf children don't have the music opportunities in school. Because of their deafness, people don't think about it and they don't get a chance to perform. But by giving someone the opportunity and support they need, they can achieve anything."

He said the composing group would discuss each note and use everyday activities as inspiration. "We always talk about our ideas. We use a story or talk about something that's happened and then try and make some sounds linked to that story," said Mr Lane.

Everyone in the room is deaf, including the tutor. Even if they aren't sure what something sounds like, they'll ask each other," said Mr Lane. The three work as part of the composing group, but will also appear in the 20-strong orchestra.

When performing, the group rely on visual cues rather than reading sheet music.

"They have a score, but they cue each other by looking or gesturing," he said.
