In observance of the Deaf Awareness Week celebrated nationwide from November 6 to 12, this year, the Department of Education (DepEd) through the Special Education Division of the Bureau of Elementary Education (SPED-BEE) set activities for the week-long celebration.

This year’s observance which carries the theme “DAW 2011: Educate, Enrich, Empower” is aimed to enhance significant public awareness on the prevention, early detection, intervention, rehabilitation, and educating people who are hearing-impaired.

At least 25 special students who have hearing impairment are enrolled in the SPED Center here, according to SPED Center Principal Mario Orais.

“The special students had their educational tour this morning at Bogo Farm in Barangay Bogo, Maasin City and Molopolo Sanctuary at Macrohon town to inculcate them the importance of our environment, in addition to the Hearing Impaired class that was visited also by the group at Macrohon Central School in Macrohon, Southern Leyte,” he bared.

The field trip was accompanied by the school head, (4) SPED teachers specialized in hearing impaired classes, President of Parents-Teachers Association for Hearing Impaired, International Deaf Education Association Leyte Regional Coordinator, Mr. & Mrs. Francis Mallorca and the Principal
himself Mr. Orais.

Other activities set by Maasin City SPED Center in observation of the Deaf Awareness Week are the academic competition, arts contest, sports competition, among others activities.

Orais said that Deaf Awareness Week is based on DepEd Memorandum No. 227 series of 2011 signed by Secretary Fr. Armin A. Luistro pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No 829 signed by former President Corazon C. Aquino declaring every November 10-16 of every year as Deaf Awareness Week.

All public, private and special schools with Special Education Centers and programs for the deaf are encouraged to undertake activities such as hanging of streamers, academic competitions, arts and crafts competition, sports competitions, skills training, symposia, product output exhibits, among other activities in observance of the said undertaking, it was learned.

In celebrating this year’s Deaf Awareness Week, the SPED official said that “the activities served as tribute to individuals , who despite their impairments, they have access to education in order for them to improve their confidence
and bring them into the mainstream and giving them access to good opportunities to become a productive member of society.”
