Lostock role model for the deaf joins project celebration (From The Bolton News)
A BOLTON man who has been part of a groundbreaking project for deaf children will attend a special event to celebrate the scheme.
Martyn Brown, aged 28, from Lostock, is one of 48 Deaf Role Models who have been recruited since the three-year project began in 2006.
He has been sharing his experiences to help parents and children cope with deafness.
The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) is inviting families, professionals and anyone with an interest in the Deaf Role Model project to a conference on Wednesday, March 4.
Mr Brown said: “As a Deaf Role Model I had the amazing opportunity to help parents and deaf children think more positively about deafness.
“At my presentations I have had people laughing and crying at my experiences.
“Parents came up afterwards and thanked me. I think my parents really would have benefited from meeting a Deaf Role Model when I was first diagnosed more than 20 years ago.”
The conference, Deaf Role Models — What Next? will be held at the City Inn Hotel, in Manchester, between 1pm and 4.30pm.
The NDCS will thank everyone who participated in the project and look to the future, based on an evaluation of the scheme by the University of Manchester.
To book a place at the conference, call Susan Murphy on 0121 234 9834, or visit ndcs.or.uk/whats_on, or email susan.murphy@ndcs.org.uk.
