Julia McGuiness of Cave Spring was named Student of the Week in August at the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring. Julia, a high school student at the GSD, was recognized by the faculty and staff for demonstrating good faith efforts, a winning attitude, and exemplary behavior.
GSD teacher Mandy Baker, who nominated Julia for the recognition, noted that Julia is a determined and motivated student. “She is always cheerful and tries her best. She thrives on consistency and succeeds by giving it just one more try,” said Baker.
Jeremiah Green of Rome was been named Student of the Week at the Georgia School for the Deaf in September. Jeremiah, a first grader at the GSD, was recognized by the faculty and staff for demonstrating his willingness to assist new students in his class.
His teacher Candace Heflin, who nominated Jeremiah for recognition, noted that “Jeremiah has been very helpful this school year. He has helped the new students find their cubbies and the restrooms.”
The GSD is the state’s only residential public school for deaf and hard of hearing students. The 161-year-old school is operated by the Georgia Department of Education and provides a comprehensive instructional program that is uniquely designed to help deaf and hard of hearing students master the Georgia Performance Standards at all grade levels.
