Local teacher of the deaf honored at national event

Folks at North Dakota School for the Deaf in Devils Lake rolled out the red carpet Friday for long-time staff member, Carol Lybeck, who has spent almost 40 years in special education and as coordinator for the school’s outreach program.

Lybeck, a 1970 Devils Lake Central High School graduate was selected to receive the Certificate of Special Recognition Award.


She received the award at a Conference of Education, Administration of Schools, Programs For the Deaf in Santa Fe, N.M. for her years of work at the Devils Lake-based school.

Lybeck was one of just three educators to be honored from schools throughout the United States.

In a letter that accompanied the announcement of the award Steve Gettel, Chairman of the CEASD Honors and Awards Committee said, “Your most recent service as Outreach/Parent Infant Program Coordinator for the North Dakota School for the Deaf is testament to your dedicated leadership in the field and your commitment to the education of deaf children. You are a most worthy recipient of this award.”
