MuskogeePhoenix.com, Muskogee, OK - Local deaf community hosts night to meet, learn
A silent dinner for the deaf community will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the Arrowhead Mall Food Court.
A media release from organizers said silent dinners are really anything but “silent” and can get pretty loud. Participants can purchase dinner from any mall food vendor, but food purchase is not a requirement.
The release said this is an opportunity for the deaf community to come together, eat dinner and visit or play games. It really gets pretty animated with all those hands flying. It’s also a good time for sign language students to practice their skills.
Tulsa has had monthly silent dinners for years, and a lot of the deaf people in the Muskogee area attend the Tulsa dinners, but it’s a long drive and they were looking for something closer to home. Local silent dinners started last December and got a good response from the deaf community and will continue with monthly dinners as long as there is an interest.
A sign language class meets once a week on Thursday evenings at Arrowhead Mall in the food court. It’s a relaxed atmosphere, and some evenings some of the deaf people sit in on the class to check on their progress and literally lend a “hand” if anyone is struggling with some signs. All skill levels are welcome.
