LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services to Unveil Its Video Interpreting Services at the DeafNation Expo in Riverside, CA May 6 & 7 - Education | Centre Daily Times - State College, PA | Penn State, Nittany Lions, weather, news, jobs, homes, apar

The DeafNation touring Expo trade show will be held at the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, CA, on Friday and Saturday, May 6 & 7. LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services will be among the organizations attending this special outdoor event to demonstrate its new video interpreting (VI): remote and or conferencing service.

“Video interpreting (VI): remote and or conference is another tool that can be used to provide effective communication,” said Chuck Scarpaci, Director of LiNKS. “VI is an interpreting service that uses video conferencing technology over dedicated lines or wireless technology offering a high-speed, wide-bandwidth video connection that delivers high-quality video image.”

VI can be used in a number of situations including work, meetings, doctor visits, classrooms and in law enforcement. VI can be used anywhere and no advanced scheduling is required.

“We face a shortage of trained and professional Sign Language Interpreters. There are more than 875,000 estimated individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in the greater L.A. Metropolitan area, and there aren’t enough trained professionals to help them gain equal access to services or simply to carry out everyday needs,” said Scarpaci.

The expo will be held in the school’s Quad Area, located at 3044 Horace St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free. Exhibitors will offer a range of products and services: telephony and communication products, educational materials, books, videotapes, on-line services, and others. Workshops and seminars will be held throughout the day ranging from financial management to education to spread awareness about the issues facing the Deaf community.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) adopted new accessible design standards, which became effective on March 15, 2011. The new Title III rule involved standards for accessible designs that are consistent with the ADA/ABA Accessibility Guidelines. VI service was one of the nine design standards. Compliance for standards for new construction and alternations and barrier removal take effect on March 15, 2012.

LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services, a division of Goodwill SOLAC, provides short and long-term ASL, trilingual, and video interpreting (VI) services to businesses, government agencies, organizations and private individuals for Deaf and hard-of-hearing clients within the greater Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside and Orange counties.
