Leonard Hall commentary: KSD event raising awareness for education - KansasCity.com

Kansas School for the Deaf will have its second annual KSD R.A.C.E. event today, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at KSD, east of downtown Olathe. R.A.C.E. stands for Raising Awareness for Children’s Education.

The main attraction of R.A.C.E. is the car show, which will feature new cars from Olathe Ford and classic cars such as Rat Rods, Model T, Mustangs, and even classic motorcycles. More than 40 classic cars and motorcycles are expected.

One interesting classic car will be shown by Mark Shapiro, who has converted his classic car into an oven. Shapiro will be cooking live on the engine hot dogs and brats, which may be purchased.

The special guest for this year’s R.A.C.E. is Luke Adams, who was on “The Amazing Race” last year and he made it to the finals of the reality television show. Adams, who is deaf, traveled with his mother across the globe using sign language as their primary mode of communication.

The public is invited in judging the classic cars that begin at noon and finish at 2 p.m. KSD will be accepting cars until noon. There will be awards given for different categories, including Best in Show, Shiniest, Rat Rod, Best Interior, Best Use of Color and even Student Favorite and Staff Favorite. Anyone may enter their classic car; the registration fee is $25.

There will be games and activities for adults and children throughout the day. The highlight will be the $1 per ticket Cake Walk, in which the winners will have the choice of taking home some of the best cakes baked in Olathe.

LaQuinta Inns & Suite of Olathe, RockAuto.com, JT Chopper Detailing and KC Scout are donating items for the R.A.C.E “Chance Drawing.”

Decker Chiropractic, Kansas Association of the Deaf with Miss Deaf Kansas, and others will have booths at the event. Farmers Insurance and KSD’s Boy Scouts will be selling popcorn.

R.A.C.E. will finish with a “Chill-Out” event, 3 to 5 p.m., with the show being provided by Disc Jockey Jeremiah Nichol of JF Productions.

It will be good to see that the proceeds from R.A.C.E. are going to help classroom and dorm activities at KSD. Last year’s proceeds were used to buy a salt-water aquarium for KSD’s Science Department, a kiln for the Art Department and books and games for the dormitories.

The public is invited to R.A.C.E. Additional information is available online at R.A.C.E.
