League for Deaf and Hard of Hearing expands Clarksville office hours | The Leaf Chronicle - www.theleafchronicle.com - Clarksville, TN

The League for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Nashville, will expand services to the deaf and hard of hearing communities by adding hours to its Clarksville satellite office.

Beginning March 3, the office will be open for onsite interpreting services on Mondays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. as well as Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
The office is located at The United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region, 1300 Madison St. The phone for the League’s office is 801-4039 (V/TTY). Services are offered at no charge to any deaf or hard of hearing resident in the area, neighboring counties or Southern Kentucky.

“This expansion demonstrates the ongoing need in the Montgomery County and surrounding communities to provide services to individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing,” said Les Hutchinson, Ph.D., League president/CEO. “We appreciate the support given to our agency, both in office space and in partial funding, by the United Way of the Greater Clarksville Region.”

Clarksville resident Brooke Roy, an interpreter with the League, will continue to provide interpreting services. A graduate of Pikes Peak Community College, Colorado Springs, Col., Roy holds an associate of applied science degree in Interpreter Preparation. She also completed sign language classes and interpreting coursework at Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fayetteville, N.C.

Roy served as a freelance interpreter for Marjorie Clere Interpreter Referral Service, Syracuse, N.Y. and as a substitute interpreter for the Thousand Islands Central School District, Cape Vincent, N.Y. She has additional experience in interpreting with the Carthage Central School District in Carthage, N.Y. and the Jefferson-Lewis-Hamilton-Herkimer-Oneida Board of Cooperative Educational Services, Watertown, N.Y.

Roy joined the League as a freelance interpreter in 2006. She has completed the written exam for national certification given by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Off-site interpreting services are available by appointment through the League’s main office in Nashville. Walk-in interpreting services are also available at the League’s Nashville office from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Friday. Emergency services are available 24/7 by calling 615-244-0979 (V/TTY).

It's good to see that the League is expanding with their sattelite offices. I know they were a lifesaver for me when my son was first diagnosed. It was my first contact with the deaf community. I learned my ASL from Deaf adults there, and I served as a volunteer TTY operator for a time in their Nashville office.
