Lawsuit over SD School for the Deaf ends

A federal judge has ruled in favor of the state in a lawsuit seeking to keep the South Dakota School for the Deaf operating in Sioux Falls.

Parents of 8 deaf or hearing impaired students filed the lawsuit in July 2009.

The School for the Deaf had an on-campus enrollment of more than 130 in the 1970s. Enrollment dropped to fewer than a dozen last year because many deaf or hearing impaired students now attend local schools around the state.

The Board of Regents oversees the school and contracts for some services with Sioux Falls-area schools.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence Piersol granted summary judgment in favor of the defendants.

That's very sad that SD is closing :( But, couldn't the state send the kids to North Dakota School for the Deaf or a School for the Deaf in a neighboring state? I also think that a lot of the time, educational placement is very political. Like the princepals of the mainstream schools want the money that kids with disabilties bring, but they don't want to expend money on giving kids with disabilites accomondations. Also, many parents may be unaware that a school for the Deaf might be a good placement. They may not even be aware that such a placement exists.
