Lake Elsinore man wanted in sexual assault of deaf girl arrested | Inland News | PE.com | Southern California News | News for Inland Southern California
A Lake Elsinore man wanted in connection with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old deaf girl was arrested in Bell Gardens on Friday afternoon, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Marcos Esteban Ortega, 39, was found about 4:40 p.m. sitting in a parked vehicle at a park in the Los Angeles County city, sheriff's spokesman Jerry Franchville said by phone.
The Inland Regional Apprehension Team, made up of Riverside and San Bernardino police, Riverside County sheriff's deputies and FBI personnel, tracked him there, he said.
On Thursday, investigators released video surveillance of a suspect taken in a Lake Elsinore convenience store. A former co-worker of Ortega saw the video on television, recognized him and called authorities, Franchville said.
The teenage assault victim had been picked up in Corona on April 14.
The girl, who attends the California School for the Deaf in Riverside, had snuck out of her parents' home and was trying to get a ride to Valley Center in San Diego County to visit friends. She told investigators that she had asked the man for a ride in exchange for gas money.
The man who picked her up stopped at the convenience store, then took her to a dark lot in Wildomar, where she was threatened and assaulted before he dropped her off in Valley Center, a news release said.
Ortega was in a different car Friday than the one authorities had been seeking. The car being sought was located late Friday in Riverside, Franchville said.
Ortega was booked late Friday on a charge of rape by force at Southwest Detention Center in Murrieta, Riverside County sheriff's officials said. He was being held on $50,000 bail.
