The Interpreting Services Department of Jewish Vocational Service (JVS), an affiliate agency of the Jewish Federation supported by the Jewish United Fund, has been serving the deaf and hard of hearing in the Chicago metropolitan area for more than a decade. Certified staff offers a broad array of sign language interpreting services to JVS clients and employers. These services are mostly used in the workplace, in schools, and for appointments in the community–basically, any situation where hearing people need to communicate with deaf people. For corporations, the department’s focus has expanded to include medical, legal, educational, religious and personal interpreting.

Recently, JVS was asked to assist a couple who had to meet with the principal of their daughter’s day school to discuss a situation that developed in one of her classes. The school called that morning and, within two hours, JVS staff found an interpreter to take the assignment and fulfill the family’s needs. Without this support, it would have been difficult, tedious, and time consuming to communicate by writing notes back and forth. The interpreter’ presence enabled quick, clear and effective understanding, which benefited everyone–the child, the parents and the administrators–who all knew that everything they discussed would remain confidential.

For persons with a hearing disability, being mainstreamed and succeeding is facilitated by effective and supportive interpreting. To learn more about services provided to the Jewish community, call Micki Baron-Gerstein, manager, (224) 625-2751 or e-mail jvsmicki@tmail.com.
