Joss Stone presents mini bus to Exeter Deaf Academy | This Is Exeter

SINGER Joss Stone has handed over the keys of a new minibus to the Exeter Deaf Academy.

The superstar, who grew up in Ashill, near Tiverton, joined the Lord Mayor John Winterbottom and Father Christmas to unveil the 17-seater wheelchair-accessible minibus to the children.

The handover took place on behalf of the Variety Club Children's Charity and parcel delivery company DPD which helped fund it.

The minibus cost £35,000 and will be used daily by pupils at the academy who are severely or profoundly deaf.

Joss had just jetted in from Miami, where she had been busy songwriting, to spend some time at her Mid Devon home. She said: “I was honoured to be asked to come down and hand over the keys to the new minibus. It is a lovely thing to do.

“I hope my involvement will help to raise awareness for the academy and get more people involved and interested.”

Joss added that she is looking forward to spending Christmas in the county. “I’ll be spending the festive period in Devon with my family, which will be a fantastic break.”

The academy, situated on Topsham Road, Exeter, caters for 107 students, aged between four and 24. The new bus will be one of two used to transport students to off-site activities, including floristry, carpentry, educational placements and visits to the library.

Jonathan Farnhill, the academy’s chief executive, said: “It has been a fantastic day, despite the rain.

“Joss was great, she showed a real interest in what we do here and the children loved meeting her.

“The bus will be greatly appreciated as the children really learn from getting out of the classroom.”

Lord Mayor of Exeter Councillor John Winterbottom attended with his wife, Lady Mayoress Joëlle. Cllr Winterbottom said: “Today has been a wonderful occasion. The much-needed bus will be hugely appreciated and to see the looks on the children’s faces when it arrived, with Santa inside, was really something.”
