JOHN DELUCA, 64 - SILive.com
Native Staten IslanderJohn S. DeLuca, 64, of Albuquerque N.M., a retired maintenance worker and volunteer in the deaf community, died Saturday in Lovelace Hospital, Albuquerque.
Mr. DeLuca grew up in Mariners Harbor. He graduated from a high school for the deaf and took several college courses.
For more than a decade, he worked in maintenance at the former St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton.
After retiring due to an injury, he became an extremely active volunteer, helping with many different causes relating to the hearing-impaired.
Mr. DeLuca settled in Albuquerque 24 years ago. He fit right into the community, becoming a fast fan of Southwestern food.
While living there, he continued volunteering and made many close friends, who became like a second family.
"He was very outgoing; everybody loved him," said his sister, JoAnne Catrama.
Mr. DeLuca was a wizard at Scrabble and attended and won many competitions. He was close to his 10 nieces and nephews, and nine great-nieces and -nephews, and enjoyed the company of his poodle, Tuffy.
While living on the Island, he was a parishioner of St. Clement/St. Michael R.C. Parish, Mariners Harbor.
In addition to his sister, JoAnne, surviving are his mother, Shirley DeLuca; his father, Salvatore (Duke) De Luca; and four sisters, RoseMarie DeLuca-Azzara, Maxine Giannico, Nancy Simione, and Jeanine DeLuca.
There will be a memorial service tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the Scamardella Funeral Home, West Brighton. Arrangements include cremation.
