Recent Grad Ranks 52 Cities By College Degrees Per Square Mile

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville is the second most uneducated city out of 52 major cities in the U.S. per square mile, according to a recent economics graduate blogging from just outside the nation's capital.

Rob Pitingolo, a blogger and economist who's labeling the cities as smartest and dumbest, calculated the number of college-degree holders per square mile to create his 52-city list called the educational attainment density.

As a result, dense cities with smaller land area and larger populations generally rank higher than other cities.

Jacksonville A Dumb City?

Oklahoma City was at the bottom of the list with 159 degree holders per square mile, followed by Jacksonville; Birmingham, Ala.; Louisville, Ky.; and Nashville, Tenn.

Some people don't think it's fair that the study is counting college degrees per square mile because Jacksonville has such a large land mass and is so spread out.

Jacksonville, the largest city in land area in the contiguous United States, is 885 square miles compared to San Francisco, the No. 1 city on the list, which is 49 square miles, about 18 times smaller than Jacksonville.

Steven Wallace, president of Florida State College at Jacksonville, called the study's methodology "something beyond absurd."

Wallace said he doesn't believe the study has any value because he feels it ignores the facts.

"The vast majority of our college grads are in suburban areas," he said.

Pitingolo said he doesn't mean to call the people of Jacksonville dumb, but many locals said they aren't too happy with the distinction.

"Intelligence isn't really based on college," Jacksonville resident Chris Debela said.
