ISRAEL last night threatened to assassinate Palestinian Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh if Hamas militants did not release a captured Israeli soldier unharmed.

The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.

It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.

Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.

But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.

The bid to free Corporal Shalit was brokered by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who last night warned Hamas it faced severe consequences if it did not curb its "extreme stance" and described the growing conflict as a lightning rod for Palestinian vengeance.

Jerusalem has made no official comment, but Egyptian state media said Israel had found the offer unacceptable. Israel has not spelt out the terms demanded by Hamas, but earlier this week it refused to buy into talk of a prisoner swap.

The Pakistani government does not support al Qaeda. Nuking Pakistan would have had no beneficial effect for the US. Actually, given the fact that the Pakistanis have a nuclear weapons program, it would have a detrimental effect on the US if they decided to counter-attack. One problem: Manpower. We don't have the manpower or money in our military to invade Iran right now. It's smaller military or higher taxes. Take your pick.

They dont have the Long Range missle to hit the US.

Israel has lied about their nuclear weapons program from Day One !!!!! Hypocrites !!!!! How can we trust the Israelis not to start something big when the whole world does not need it. The Israelis also lied to the Americans too and here is the proof. While I do not trust the islamics to have nuclear weapons. Iran is basically trying to do the same thing the Israelis are doing only Israel is telling America to put pressure on Iran and of course what do you except coming from Iran when they are going to build a nuclear facility for peaceful purposes then Israel rages against Iran and of couse the islamic government of Iran got sooo angry. Israel also is forgetting something else very important, if Israel tried to wipe Palestine off the map then Israel is wiped off the map too in the process because nuclear enegry just will blow the whole state of Israel away along with Palestine. That is something Israel tends to forget.

Actually, Britain, France and US helped Israel building the nuclear weapons to protect it from Arab nations. Israel was invaded twice, I think and I don't blame them...

And remember who controls most of the media... :)

If the US was helping Israel then the Americans would have known about it in the 1960's !!!!!
 
CIA knew about this since 60s and not just that, US supplied nuclear tipped Harpoon missiles to Israel for their submarines in 2003.

Everyone knows Israel has nuclear weapons. Israel won't officially confirm it because that'd get them attacked by the Arab League (again), but the fact that Israel has such weapons isn't really a well-kept (or even kept at all) secret.

You might want to learn how to identify political affiliation a little more. Your aim is not really in the William Tell department. No, "If I don't like it, it's a liberal" doesn't really help you.
 
This kind of shows the attitude of terrorist organizations. Some are under the belief that if you give a terrorist what they want, they will stop terrorising. That isn't true and I'm not sure why so many people believe that it will. Israel has suffered from terroristic acts against its nation. Many of those groups make it clear that they will not be satisfied until Israel is wiped off the map (and in some schools here in the US, Israel is removed from maps).

So, Israel gives in to terrorism and gives the terrorists what they want, hoping it will create peace. Well, what happened? The terrorists attacks have not quit and Israel is no safer this week than it was before giving into the demands of radical groups.

While I do not think a nation should assassinate other leaders, can you blame Israel? They gave the palestinian people and government what they wanted...and yet it continues on. While I do not think assassination is the answer, kudos for israel for putting their foot down instead of suffering at the hands of a bully.
 
I said a quiet prayer today that the Israeli soldier be set free and I don't like what the Palestinians are doing. That is no military tactic at all.

I agree it isn't. It does, however, seem to be serving the purposes of the aggressors in this situation (Whether or not they actually help the Palestinians is another matter). I really think this whole conflict is silly, but I can very much understand the historical precedent leading to this violence.



Off-point, have you read von Clausewitz? I have a copy of his timeless classic, On War. I'm particularly fond of his chapter titled On Military Genius.

Clausewitz is still studied at West Point because of the sheer brilliance of his analyses. He is, however, outdated enough that he lists the components of an army as infantry, cavalry and artillery.

Changing topic yet again, if you've read Sun Tzu, he reminds us that there is no instance where a state has benefited from prolonged warfare. It's stuff like that that worries me about the War on Terror. For example, is there a way to conclude the War on Terror in a decisive victory without jeopardizing the foreign economic and political relationships that enhance the welfare of this country?
 
Hi Endymion, I am very familiar with the works of von Clausewitz and with Sun Tzu. The future will be one that of guerrila warfare all the way right up until WW III which is really tragical and very unfortunate.
