Kidnapped Boy Makes Daring Escape
Saturday, Feb 24, 2007 - 09:53 PM
Florida authorities say a 13-year-old boy abducted at gunpoint from a school bus stop today made a "miraculous" escape.
Clay Moore wasn't injured except for scratches and scrapes. The incident happened in Parrish, about 30 miles southeast of St. Petersburg. Moore was standing with about a dozen children and was closest to the gunman's red truck when he was taken at gunpoint about about nine a.m.
A sheriff says the the teen was bound, but managed to free himself and walk until he found a farm worker with a cell phone. He called his mother.
A manhunt is under way for the gunman. And authorities are investigating reports that a similar truck had followed other children in the area recently.

Child approached by man in small pickup, police say

Neighbors rallied Tuesday to protect neighborhood children after a near abduction was reported Monday afternoon in the Ricefields subdivision in Pawleys Island.
The incident happened around 3:35 p.m. Monday as an 8-year-old girl walked to a friend's house, said Sgt. Neil Johnson, spokesman for the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.
The girl was approached by a man in a small truck, he said.
The man reportedly told the girl to get into his vehicle, Johnson said.
"The suspect stopped and told the 8-year-old that her mother wanted him to pick her up and take her to her friend's residence," Johnson said.
"The child refused to get in the truck and told the suspect to leave her alone."
The child told police the man followed her a short distance, then drove away.
The girl told her friend's mother, who called police.
...Johnson said the man is white and thought to be about 40-years-old.
He has brownish-colored hair, and a beard and mustache. At the time of the incident, he was driving a small red pickup truck with chrome or shiny wheels and large tires.
Johnson said sheriff's deputies were told that a neighbor saw a vehicle matching the description on January 7 and earlier in December.
