The Wii U hasn’t been doing particularly well in the market. According to NPD, the Wii U only sold roughly 57,000 units in the US in January, and February wasn’t much better: Last month, Nintendo’s latest console only sold an estimated 64,000 units. Considering that the Wii U launched just a few months ago, these incredibly low numbers are cause for worry.

The Xbox 360, a seven-year-old console, sold over 300,000 units last month in the US. The brand new Wii U just can’t compete with the aging PS3 and Xbox 360. It’s not simply because of tech specs — clock speed and RAM don’t sell consoles. It’s all about the games. Traditionally, people buy Nintendo consoles for first-party games. Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and Star Fox sell consoles, but so far, on the Wii U, there isn’t much in the way of big Nintendo releases. Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U were decent launch titles, but it’s going to take a lot more than those games to make the Wii U a viable platform. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting to see what is in store from most of Nintendo’s biggest franchises.

When the Wii U launched with Assassin’s Creed III, Mass Effect 3, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II, speculation started brewing that the Wii U would serve as a way for the game industry to ship a ton of ports until the next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft launched. Mostly anything that ran on current-gen hardware could be slapped onto the Wii U, and sold to a slightly different audience. Strangely, that seems to have stalled out in a big way. We’re not even seeing some major new games ship with Wii U support. There are numerous upcoming games being billed as “closers” for this generation, and they aren’t coming to the Wii U. Grand Theft Auto V and Saints Row 4 are big names that will presumably sell countless copies, but the Wii U is being left out in the cold. Once games start shipping on the Xbox 720 and PS4 using next-gen game engines, any hope of cheap and easy ports to the Wii U will be lost.

Lackluster first- and third-party support are killing sales of the Wii U. As the newest console, it should be dominating sales and mindshare at this point. Instead, my Wii U has been serving as a $350 web browser for my bedroom television for the past three months. If Nintendo doesn’t come out swinging at the Game Developers Conference and E3 this year, we might be looking at the end of home consoles for Nintendo. Handheld gaming still does very well for Nintendo — especially in Japan. If the Wii U continues to flounder, it’s plausible that we could see a handheld-only Nintendo in the next few years. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, though.

Sony will eventually as only one Japanese console if Nintendo left console business.

Nintendo still has enough money in its bank to survive, thanks to profitable handheld consoles. Big N is working with indie game developers, adjusting the requirements to make easy for them to publish their games to eShop.

Publishers and developers simply dismissed Wii U over its hardware power, not the unique features included new gamepad. EA said their games can't run on it. I have serious problem with EA although it make too many sequels, only half-baked games with microtransactions and DLCs. Not mentioned it will force EA game buyers to use Origin. That is why Nintendo disagreed with EA's demands.

Unisoft broke its promise to Wii U owners by had Rayman Legends delayed to September 2013, just excuse to make PS3 and Xbox 360 version, just for profits' sake.

Sony is about following the path to Sega's console failure. Sony just sold two buildings for a billion dollars each and laid off 900 workers as reported few days ago. Its fate will be decided if it suffered more losses from PS4 sales if not backed up by good games from top game studios.

I heard many people didn't like PS4 hardware because its power only compared to mid-range gaming computers. My gaming computer I built six years ago would easily outpower PS4. So is Microsoft's 'nextbox' too.

I didn't give a damn about PS4 or Microsoft's unnamed console. I have Wii U, 3DS, and Steam to provide me good time.

Is that Ubisoft? I like their old Rainbow Six series.

...My gaming computer I built six years ago would easily outpower PS4...

I am not surprised! That's why I built my own gaming rig--I could upgrades GPU, RAM, CPU easily to accommodates new game.

PS3/Xbox is good for multiplayer FPS which is the only reason I have PS3. Single player FPS-I play it on my gaming rig--with much better video quality.

Off the point...I am curious--may I ask what species is reptilian alien in your profile picture? Gorn? I dont know if that's new Gorn look or if I miss something. I watched TNG, DS9, VOY, some TOS, and saw all movies. I played few Star Trek PC games back in late 90's.

Many game developers prefer to have most games sold, especially games on Xbox 360 and PS3 are easily outsold Nintendo consoles.

Not really, Sony has much success with PS3 and they don't want to follow repeat of mistake with PS3 at early launch, so they switched to x86 instruction set for CPU and many game developers praised PS4 as easier to develop the game and on par with PC. The company restructuring is common for transition, such as lay workers off, shut some buildings down, change the projects, so Microsoft, Sony and many game publishers followed those way. I'm predicted that PS4 and next Xbox will going be successful within year, also someone confirmed that next Xbox will support play offline game so it put off any chance to kill Xbox. I don't think Microsoft will be very stupid with completely online console, neither is Sony.

PS4 “will out-power most PCs for years to come”, says Just Cause dev | VG247

PS4 will be on par to high range gaming computer with single card but not closer as PC with max, high end GPU (ATI Radeon HD 7990 or GeForce GTX 690), or SLI/CrossFire mode. The graphic looks very promising, according to game trailer and it is similar to my gaming PC with high end GPU (Intel Core i5 and GeForce GTX 580).

Due to cost factor, PS4 will obviously not outperform any extremely, high end PC so game console is designed to be cost effective and cheaper to play game. The graphic will be sufficient for game developers to tweak with promising graphic. Most PC games are ported from game consoles with few tweaks nowadays, but with PS4 and next Xbox use x86 instruction set so it will be very easier for game developers to port the games to PC with small change (usually OS tweaks). That left you with larger PC libraries in near future and I support Sony/Microsoft's move with CPU instruction set.

I didn't give a damn about PS4 or Microsoft's unnamed console. I have Wii U, 3DS, and Steam to provide me good time.

It isn't new to me about you aren't Sony or Microsoft fan. That's fine with me, but if you don't care about PS4 or next Xbox, so that means you will have less new PC games because PC games are usually depends on influence from game consoles at beginning, known as porting by many game developers. There are millions of customers buy Xbox 360 and PS3, so both of systems may not part of your typical but many customers love it.

I'm heavily PC gamer (always buy PC version for all third parties that ported to console) but I use PS3 for most first party games and any third parties that aren't port to PC. I'm big fan of Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, GT5, Killzone, Heavy Pain.

I'm retired from Xbox and Nintendo.

In case, if Nintendo left console business so they will be software company that make games for Sony/Microsoft and PC, however that's very last resort because Nintendo will try anything to prevent the scenario occur that may cause to left the console business, especially cut Wii U's cost, increase of pressure on game developers, invest in first party games and new IP, etc.

The graphic comparison between PC and PS3/Xbox 360 is getting much wider now, so playing Sleeping Dogs and Assassin's Creed III on PC make me feel PS3 like PS1.

I can easily max out nearly all PC games with good FPS and the graphic is very, very undoubtedly superior to console version.

Due to usher syndrome, it is getting more difficult to play game on bigger screen (over 40 inches HDTV) when games are set at lower resolution, especially many PS3 games don't support 1080p due to hardware limitation and they are very blurry in motion.

I'm very comfortable with nice PC monitor with 120 Hz (less blurry).

There is interesting article about compare between PC gaming and PS4.
You Can't Build A PS4: Why Sony's Next Console Is Truly Next-Gen And Your PC Isn't - Forbes

Like I said, the role of PC gaming and console gaming are very different. The game's graphic texture (beside of high anti-aliasing) maybe identical or similar on both systems but PC will have more FPS and allowed to use much higher AA, however in few years, graphic will be more superior on PC.

The article said PS4's unified CPU/GPU/RAM/VRAM are much cheaper than separate parts that allow game console to cost at $400 instead of $600+.

Nintendo used GREAT graphic and RPG/action. Now it's all CRAP games about song, dance, gym, kid games, etc. and most game's graphic are cartoon. :ugh:

PS3 looks better than Wii U.

I tried Wii U's gamepad and it's awful bigass and heavy. I am perfect happy with my iPhone 5 and PS3 controller as game over it due easy for my hands to control it.

Wii U still come with power supply and made it looks messed around the TV. Good thing my PS3's power supply is built-in and looks CLEAN.

My custom gaming rig is at its last stand now, will get full upgrade on main components soon as I secure a fund, perhaps next year. The rig is still remained strong with few new-brand games.

Honestly, I played CoD and Fallout 3 games on my nephew's PS3 and ended up disliked the controller so greatly. It felt so small to my hands and not well with aiming. I traditionally use keyboard and mouse method for FPS and action games. I can score good shots with them. I have Razor Xbox 360 controller hooked to my rig to play some games with simple controls. Also I use it to drive vehicles in open-world or race games like GTA and Saints Row series. As for Xbox 360, I dismissed the console because of the hardware failure issues (RROD) and Xbox LIVE membership costs. Why I have to pay more to play multiplayer games on Xbox 360 while I can do PC games for free?
PS3 and Wii U multiplayer mode don't costs the owners more. Wii U supports online now as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate offers multiplayer mode to team up and hunt down the hardest monsters.

My avatar is custom alien species created by me as Starfleet character on Star Trek Online. I have no thoughts of give the species a name. Gorn is playable species if sided with Klingon Defense Force. The game is free to play now. It is getting new Romulan faction soon.

Wii U is just got out on November last year. It is common to not have good games to start with. Now Wii U have NintendoLand, LEGO City: Undercover, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate as now. LEGO City is best LEGO game I ever played. I put over 60 hours on it to get 100% completion. Zelda WW HD is on way soon. So is new Pokemon game with physical collectible figures based on popular Skylanders series. Disney Infinity is coming on Wii U too.

Wii U Delxue (colored in black) outsell the Standard (white) because of bundle with NintendoLand, better HHD and few accessories. I have Delxue.

Wii U gamepad has few advantages. Yes it is big because of the touchscreen size yet comfortable to me. I love how NintendoLand make full use of the gamepad in minigames. Gamepad acts like important tool in LEGO City: Undercover to find hidden items. I can keep play games or watch Netflix/Hulu Plus on it without need of TV.

I pick up PC version if Xbox 360/PS3 games are ported as long as they are on Steam. I know Darksiders 2, The Cave, and Batman: AC are available on Wii U but I already bought them on Steam long time before Wii U version.

We will know more about new Wii U games in future.

By the way, Wii DID have mature games. MadWorld, Metroid Prime 3, Other M, Trilogy, GoldenEye 007, Bully, and RE4. Super Melee Bros. Brawl too. I own those games. I don't have much Wii games in my game library but I know how to pick good games.

EDIT: Sony decided to switch to x86 on PS4 is good decision but it will costs them the PS3 and PSN game backwards compatibility. That may make Sony suffer more like Nintendo did with Wii U last year. It may end up piss off the PS3 users, perhaps Battlefield and CoD fans or owners with big library of PSN games. I do know Wii U doesn't play Gamecube games. I simply pulled my good old Gamecube out on my TV stand to make up for Wii's missing place.

It looks like Nintendo will going be repeat of Sega's history.

Funny, now that I think about it, it's probably accurate. I remember how I downloaded lots of Dreamcast ISOs and played them via Utopia Boot CD.

Four or three years ago, I can't remember when, I softmodded my own Wii with a little hacking utility. I burned lots of ISOs as well and played them. At that point I remember how Wii market went slump, much like how Sega Dreamcast went thru. Thats when I made a prediction- Wii will be just like Dreamcast.

I guess it's all about how illegal stuff are utilized hehe

I hacked my Wii to play old games and emulators I downloaded from Internet. Then anything trashed after updates made to Wii.

I do agree with piracy affected video game market. Many players aren't happy with $50-$60 per a copy or afraid to buy non-refundable half-baked games from major game developers/publishers (I'm looking at you EA!). Then mobile and indie games became popular due to the low prices and easy access on various devices other than home consoles so are Free-to-Play games (Team Fortress 2, Star Trek Online, AirMech, and Asian MMORPGs). Nintendo and Sony want them on their home consoles to avoid the Dreamcast disaster. Nintendo knew enough from Virtual Boy.

lol Nintendo will not let Zelda, Mario, Metroid be on other game PERIOD. Otherwise, it will ruin all these game.

Hardcord VG still look at Nintendo as kids. Let pretend, Nintendo is like Pixar, all are high quality games, not graphic. That's problem damage youth kids still doing since.

Yes, I never forgot about how horrible is PS2 graphic when compare to Gamecube and that why Sony released PS3 in one year later (in 2006) instead of 2005.

If you played PC games for long time so you will feel like spoiled because you can tell about how bad is graphic in PS3 if you compare with PC - in some games.

I don't like Wii U's gamepad either.

My lastest update for my custom gaming rig was in 2011 and will not plan to update because I can still max all games out with good FPS.

I recommended you to wait until after PS4 and Xbox 720 releases so GeForce can polish up the PC graphic to latest, fastest GPU beat both systems. That why I will not update my rig until 2014 or 2015, same goes with my MacBook Pro.

Oh yes, you are spoiled with keyboard and mouse. I used to be GREAT with PS controller but not anymore after played PC games with keyboard and mouse, so I retired from any FPS on PS3 due to poor control like you said.

Mouse always better than ANY controller for AIM. I am PC gamer guy. :D

Of course, I'm not good with PS controller anymore after played PC games for very long time.

Same here - I pick PC first but I hate to wait so longer - especially Ubisoft because they delayed PC game releases to boost the console sales.

I'm not concerned with backward compatibility because I will keep PS3 for while and Sony could make emulator software (I doubt because of compatibility issue). Sony already suffered with PS3 with few years - 2006 until 2008/2009 because of cell processor.

That why I tried game first before I buy it.

Not like game - move to trash.

Like game - buy game.

Serious, I want something real good game like bioshock infinite, dead space 3, far cry 3, metal gear rising, etc. Not lame simple games like super mario bros since 80's. I am not fan of re-play on old game again. Once play and beat then move on new game. There is millions of new games and I don't see what's point to waste time to re-play on old game that you already beat it before.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate isn't made for kids.

All game studios do same on remakes, sequels, and re-releases too. SquareEnix and their Final Fantasy and Heart Kingdoms games. Same with Capcom. EA did with sports games and other series. They are milking the poor cows and ignored other farm animals.

Yes, I am tired of see more Mario games. I just want others, not Marios.

EDIT: This thread is becoming pointless although Wii U is its first year just what happened with PS3. It will get better as years goes on.
