Introduction to sign language and deaf culture class offered | Events
The Cape May County Library is offering “Introduction to Sign Language and Deaf Culture.” The class will be held for 12 weeks at 7 p.m. on Mondays until Dec. 6 at the main branch of the library, 30 Mechanic Street, in Cape May Court House.
The class is open to beginners with little or no sign language experience, as well as to individuals with some previous experience who would like to enhance their knowledge of sign language. Participants must be 14 years of age or older to attend. The course will combine vocabulary learning with the basics of grammar and linguistics, and will include a brief introduction to deaf history and culture.
Class instructor Misty Bratton completed the interpreter education program for American Sign Language at Camden County College. Bratton is a member of the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf, both nationally and in the New Jersey chapter, and has been certified for educational interpreting through the nationally recognized Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment. She is currently working in Cape May County as a freelance interpreter for the deaf.
