Hi everyone! I am not deaf but I have someone that works for me that is. She has been with us for 8 years now and is more family than an employee. She doesn't know international signing as she never had formal teaching. We do however have our own sign language. After 8 years, you figure it out even if it is our own code language. We use pictures alot when we do not understand eachother but you can only find so much in magazines and supermarket fliers. Does anyone know of websites where I can download pictures of objects, tasks, hobbies, etc. that I can print out? We use index cards and have a file when we need it. :ty: in advance.

Can you tell us if she uses her own sign language and/or what sign language she uses?

Pictures for communication

That would be really helpful for me too. I am not deaf, but have APD (Auditory Processing Disorder) and pictures are easier for me as well. I also teach family learning, and have two Deaf learners, who use BSL. This term I don't have BSL interpreter, but want to make it easier for us to communicate. Anyone else heard of APD? Any advice? New diagnosis and am struggling to understand it all.

signing

She uses her own sign language... We make up signs for different things when we do not have a sign for it. We really use very practical signs or motions for things. I have used magazines for pictures and cut them and paste them on index cards and that is how we have started our mini dictionary you could say.

if she uses american sign language you could go to ASL American Sign Language and try to find some things on there that you could print out. Just a thought. that sight is helping me to learn sign language.

Thanks

Thanks, Steph, I will look into it...by the way...cute dogs, is that a Sheltie? We have one and she is wonderful. We have 4 dogs in the house...and having to do with this case....since I can not call out for Maribel(the woman that works for us) , the dogs do it for me. They let her know when I am looking for her or if someone is at the door and in some cases have let her know of emergencies. Dogs are wonderful for any type of disability, even if not trained like mine.
