There's a tanning ban bill in the legislature that could drastically change prom season for a lot of high school students. Lawmakers are trying to make indoor tanning illegal for anyone under 18-years-old.

New York would be the first state to make this change if the bill becomes law.

There are already restrictions on tanning teens. Anyone under 18 has to have his or her parents sign a consent form.

The new bill wants to do away with that and just ban underage tanning altogether.

The bulbs are burning brightly tonight at Body & Sol Tanning in Albany and with summer approaching, business is good according to owner Scott Dettenrieder.

"Right now, I bet a good 40 percent of it is high schoolers coming in just for getting ready for their prom," said Dettenrieder.

One of those high schoolers is 17-year-old Stephanie Carson. The Albany High senior says she's aware of the risks of indoor tanning.

"I do think about the dangers like skin cancer and stuff but anything in this world can give you dangers," said Carson.

Some people are trying to end the springtime ritual of teens tanning in preparation for prom by pushing legislation to would ban indoor tanning for anyone under 18 in New York State.

"Women in their 20s are dying from skin cancer because they have spent years using tanning beds," said Sherry Tomasky with the American Cancer Society.

Tomasky says instances of melanoma are on the rise among young Caucasian women in New York.

There are already parental consent forms for underage tanners along with warning labels right on the tanning beds.

"So it's not like we're doing anything flying blind in here so they know right out front what is the dangers or the warnings of UV radiation," said Dettenrieder. "Personally, I think the state has - like I said - a lot bigger things to worry about than tanning right now at this moment."

Tomasky says some parents may still feel pressured to let their teens tan.

"We want to make sure that parents are armed with a law that definitively helps them say no," said Tomasky.

This bill has support from majority members in both the Assembly and the Senate - a good sign for anyone who wants it to pass.

I think that's a great idea. Tanning is stupid for anyone, but allowing immature and impulsive teens to put their lives at risk without being fully capable of appreciating the consequences is silly.

Teenage don't have good concept to take tan... outside! Oh in New York City? Wait until summer, then.
