Incident leads to sanctions to Indiana Deaf football | IndyStar.com | The Indianapolis Star
Indiana School for the Deaf has canceled its football game Saturday at Maryland School for the Deaf, disciplined some players on the team and removed two assistant coaches from their positions in the aftermath of an incident that occurred last weekend during a trip to Texas for a game.
Indiana Deaf athletic director Rusty Crace declined to provide details about the incident, the number of players involved, their ages or the severity of the punishment.
"The incident was immediately reported to (the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services)," Crace said in an e-mail. "There was an investigation (and) it was concluded that there was no sexual assault. Our coaches were disciplined (and) a few of our students were disciplined for various behaviors, including vandalism, and some game suspensions were given."
The Texas DFPS would not confirm or deny having conducted an investigation.
Indiana Deaf was in Austin, Texas, to play the Texas School for the Deaf last Saturday. Texas Deaf athletic director Chris Hamilton referred all questions to Crace.
"If we would play with our limited number of players, we would be risking . . . injuries as well as incurring unnecessary travel expenses," Crace said. "Maryland School for the Deaf's football team is one of the best teams in the nation and they are well-trained and equipped. Our football team has (already) struggled with a large number of injuries this year. The Indiana School for the Deaf withdrew . . . because our foremost concern is the health and safety of our team."
Indiana Deaf (0-8) has lost 20 consecutive games -- including 57-15 to Texas Deaf -- and been outscored 392-83 this season.
Maryland Deaf will play Baltimore Freedom Academy instead, according to athletic director Andrew Bonheyo. The Maryland Deaf website claims Deaf Prep Championships in 2001 and from '03 to '09. The team is 7-0 and has outscored opponents 304-19, according to its team page on maxpreps.com.
