3 months ago Tim and Kathleen Schriver were facing a $3500 bill from a sewer company and a lien on their property.
Just over a year ago, NIPSCO hired a contractor to relocate gas main required for a Cook Road improvement project. The Schriver's sewer line was damaged in the process and they hired a 3rd party contractor to repair it.
The Schriver's felt not only was the work not done properly, but that the contractor failed to communicate the costs in writing, the initial estimate was for just $800.
When we contacted Nipsco in November, they had already fixed the gas line and offered to pay a portion of the Schriver's sewer bill. They've now agreed to pay $3000 to the contractor, in exchange for the Schriver's debt and lien being wiped clean.
"our lawyer said they were going to be paying for it and I just had this rush of emotion come over me. I had such a relief", said Tim Schriver through an interpreter with the League for the Blind and Disabled.
"I had such a huge relief when I heard that Nipsco was doing that, because there are so few companies that are really coming through. Wow, is all I can say and now I can finally sleep at night", said Kathleen Schriver through her interpreter.
Attorney fees were always the biggest hurdle in this case, and the sewer company will be left with those. The Schriver's don't feel the bill would be resolved without our help, but clearly they have many to thank, including Garth Sponseller, with the League for the Blind and Disabled, their attorney and a longtime neighbor that initially came to us when he felt his neighbors were being wronged.
"Nipsco did such a good job and I want to thank the T.V. station for having "In Your Corner", because the community wouldn't be the way it is if it wouldn't be for you guys to help out, and I still owe you a hug", said neighbor Andy Kay.
Andy got a round of hugs after his hard work, this story has an emotional and happy ending for the Schriver's and it gave us a chance to focus on daily communications challenges that deaf individuals face and the great work that agencies like the League for the Blind and Disabled due to help them communicate
