Improving captions...

Is there a way to improve the captions/subtitles that doesn't work properly at HD stations
whereas at the standard ones they do?
For example, the recent season of True Blood (yaaay!!) is being broadcast here in Canada at the MC -a standard one and MCHD - a high definition one, obviously- at the same time
but the HD channel hardly shows any captions ever! grrr and IF they do pop up at all they are hopelessly! scrambled! up! arrrghhh!!!.....

I am not sure yet whether the T B captions are alright in the standard version (I've pre-recorded 2 episodes in HD before I got to watch any)
but I know for a fact that any other movie, show etc that come with broken CC or subtitles if switched to a standard station they start running perfectly well!

The problem is, of course the picture quality of HD is so much better, so naturally I'd rather watch all my shows in HD, duh.

Is there a way to fix this problem? special cable or ... ??
I did check out if any CC/subtitles turning on is required by the manual of the TV/PVR/DVD -whatever equipment we use.
Oh, and we are currently Shaw Cable subscribers. nothing seem to be helping :(

You're using a DVR to play the shows right? If so I've had that problem rarely and the solution is to play it and then click pause RIGHT AWAY. And leave it paused for about 30 seconds then click play and the captoins work again.
 
Thank you for this valuable bit of information.

This however is not the problem, I think as the captions are not working even during live broadcast.
The move Cosmopolis with Robert Pattinson of HP and Twilight saga- always but always captions are working only with standard station.
I've never recorded this movie, so I have no idea if your tip would work?

I had issues with CC at several stations i.e. HBO, Showtime, and StarZ (and their sub stations). I don't really know where the issue really happened at - I mean, when I watched Game of Throne on my DISH TV and CC sometimes skipped some words. Then I watched it again on HBO GO with my Apple TV, it did showed some pause at exactly where it skipped at.

It could be somebody who add CC on TV probably screwed it up or did not do job very well. I don't know...

Maybe Canada has a lousy system. Ask your friends or neighbors to see if captions work on their set-top box while watching HD programs. That's an easy way to find out whether there's something wrong with your STB or not.
 
I think if the difference in CC quality is only between the HD and standard channels - I just watched True Blood recorded in standard definition and the captions are fine!,
then the problem must be somehow in HD reception.

I am at loss why would that happen, but somehow it does.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, "wonderful" technology.
And yes, I suspect you guys in US got it so much better.

Oh, yeah, I have FiOS HD DVR and I never had problems with digital captions on HD programs. What's more, there are options to change colors, font types and sizes. I wonder if you also have those options. What about your neighbors or deaf friends in your hometown? Do they have the same problem?

Yes, I can change size, font, color, background color ect but thast's about it.
I also can turn on/off HD and standard caption/subtitles in my LG TV,
the SHARP TV is not mine but from what I could have seen whatever was there was turned on, so all is well I guess.

I don't have any deaf friends here, I am sorry to say.
Of all my hearing friends and family who would know how to use CC, they are too "caption stupid" to tell me something useful, lolol,
all they keep saying is - "yeah, yeah they work" :giggle:
