Mostly they are screwing us to death and creating a whole phony economy around it with these modern vehicles. They can take the whole bunch of them and stick em'. Sideways. With their phony doors open. Trunk too.

I ask as I saw a vehicle on craigslist that I liked, but it needed a thermostat. I worry that it would have internal damage to engine. Why would someone sell a vehicle simply because it needed a thermostat?

I guess you are already know that a seller try to bait you to buy a car. Every people see word "Need Head Gaskets" then they won't buy a car. Want some professional advice from me?

1) Question with an owner or seller about service history like repairs by the shop or review repair order papers, pay attention on any recommend or overheating complaint etc, if so then the car might have problem with overheated or coolant leak due to blown head gaskets. Or cracked block/head(s). That's raise your concern.
2) If no repair history, open a hood, open oil filler cap, check sign of white form buildup under the oil filler cap and also oil dipstick for oil color. If they show, don't buy a car
Sometime vehicle with very low mileage, have internal coolant leaks too. Be careful with used vehicle. Good luck

At a gas station, I've seen many German vehicles came in for overheating in years, often replace T-Stats, water pumps, radiators, coolant reservoirs and coolant hoses even customers mentioned they saw red mark in coolant temperature gauges. We fix them, have not see blown head gaskets in one sight that disappoint us. German vehicles are the number one in overheatings due to coolant loss than any vehicles I tell you.

Anything is possible... However I sincerely doubt that because a little piece ( $12.00 for my last cars thermostat ) is bad, it means your whole engine is doomed. ( Head gasket ) Though, I definitely have had the thermostat and head gasket go out at the same time... ( That's why I selected quite possible as it is definitely possible you could need it at any time. :P ) Good lord though, never do I EVER again want to go through paying to have the head gasket replaced ( last car ) that was just hell... :ugh:
