Boise, Idaho News, Weather and Traffic - KTRV Fox 12 - Idaho deaf, blind school braces for cuts
Lawmakers may consider a plan to allow the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind to tap into an education reserve fund if there are more cuts in state spending.
The school is trimming more than $335,000 from its budget after Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter ordered a 4% holdback in state spending this year.
Public schools under the state Department of Education will tap into a reserve fund created by lawmakers to make up for a $60 million loss.
The school for deaf and blind students cannot access fund because it is supervised by the state Board of Education, but public schools chief Tom Luna says that could change.
At a state Board of Education Meeting on Thursday, Luna said a plan to move financial oversight of the school under his department is being considered.
Luna says the change needs lawmaker approval and would allow the school to access the fund in case of more state holdbacks during the next fiscal year, which begins in July 1.
