Ice cream social : zFeatured : Redding Record Searchlight

“So scary,” is what Jennifer Brenenstahl of Redding had to say about the Deaf Ice Cream Social she attended Wednesday afternoon at Cold Stone Creamery in Redding.

But Brenenstahl wasn’t scared about the differences between herself and the deaf people she had just met. She was anxious about her own ability to communicate and get to know them better.

Brenenstahl is a student in an American Sign Language class at Shasta College, and was one of a number of students who showed up at the social to get some first-hand experienceat signing.

“I want my kids to know two languages” (English and American Sign Language), Brenenstahl said.

The social was one of three events the Norcal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing hosted this September, Deaf Awareness Month.

“It’s kind of opened my eyes,” said Cold Stone manager James Mitchell, who opened more than his doors to help facilitate the event. Mitchell said that 20 percent of the proceeds made from ice cream sales during the event would go to benefit Norcal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
