I am Katerina and I am doing my master in Audiovisual translation and at the moment Iam working on my dissertation which involves the subtitling of the musical "The sound of music" for the deaf and hard of hearing. So, I am very interested in your opinion and feedback as the target viewers.
To make your life easier and to save time, the questions are structured so as to be answered in a Yes/No fashion, but if you want to express your opinion elaborately, please be my guest. You can also add whatever in your opinion would make the subtitles of a musical more effetive. My questions are the following:
1. Would you prefer the subtitles in general to be as concise as possible?
2. Or to contain as much information as possible in the allocated time?
3. Would you like the words that are emphasised in a sentence to be marked by the use of another font
(for example, CAPITALS for loud words/speech and italics for emphasised words in a sentence)?
4. Do you prefer the subtitles that contain features like interjections (“oh”, “ah”), discourse markers (“well”) that do not bear meaning but convey the spoken language quality of the dialogue?
5. Would you like the subtitles to include comments in brackets about the tone of voice of the speaker when she/he is singing in the musical [for example, (Sadly) or (Confident)]?
6. Are you happy with the conventions of subtitling songs that include the use of italics, no punctuation, the symbol “#” in the beginning of each subtitle and a capital letter in each line?
(for example: in italics
# The hills are alive
With the sound of music)
7. Would you like the time of the subtitles of songs to correspond to the time that each line/verse is actually sung?
(For example when a verse of a song lasts for many seconds to stay on screen for equally many seconds and when it is sung in a quick tempo to stay on screen for equally little time.)?
