who doesn't speak. Which device would you recommend for purchase to turn text/typing in to speech?

Using hands to communicate doesn't cost much. Pen & paper are cheap.

Both of you could sit in front of a computer and share a keyboard, using software to convert what you type to speech, but that would be kind of ridiculous.....

I'm confused is there also someone who can't read? Why does it need to be turned into speech?

Learn to sign Sign Language in your area. Communicate if he or she can not speak unless that person is hearing or deaf. What about computers (there were two small computers where they can communicate by typing each other)? If you don't know how to sign, then paper and pen is the best way to communicate each other.

Also how about using texting each other for conversation if you have cellphone or smartphone? :hmm:

He says the person is young, could be around other kids...... You can't expect a 4 year old to read and write

How would you know as the OP did not mention how old the young family member? He was talking about the device.

If the young family member can read and write, he or she can do it. Thanksinadvance should explain more clearly on this, though. :naughty:

How about any laptop that could have a program installed to simulate speech?

Actually, I am surprised some education program hasn't already done this for you.

And which device did you suggest? pen and paper and texting.....if texting was an option they wouldn't need text to speech they would just text  Those weren't alternatives just more of the same. Obviously the one that can't talk must be able to text, otherwise he wouldn't have asked for a text to speech. No I don't know, but a likely reason for asking this would be if other people the person deals with cannot read what they're texting.....other young family member, younger ones. :hmm: or maybe a blind or nearly blind one??

but I got nothing, must be software available though probably not a device, but software you can put on a device.

I am thinking along the line of Dragon but the speaker (teacher) would speak into the microphone to make voice recognization so that the words on the computer would be read carefully what the speaker is saying.

As for the person who can not speak would have to type it so the OP can read it, not voice. Also I think he was thinking about what the disabled person who could not speak had to punch on the keyboard to make sound of artificial voice. I saw that device on the some old programs before. Still use that today, I think. I don't know what it is call. :hmm:

Well, why isn't the relative speaking? Autism? Hearing lost? Selective mutism? Trauma? The reasons could help you figure out a better way. Plus, how old is the relative?
