to alldeaf! I am hearing too but have had over 6 years of friendships with deaf people. I'm most active in the cochlear implant/hearing aid section.

Meh, it's generally not an insult to most culturally Deaf people. My deaf friends use the word "hear" all the time, even when signing, to refer to communication.mermaid said:I'm about to get my AA in Deaf Studies and have been slightly involved in the Deaf Community for years, but I'm really confused about what to feel about this quote.

Umm...it depends on what it means about "let's hear it"...is it about our ears? or hear our voices like our speech of rights? Did deaf person created this t shirt? If so, then I think its fine about it...![]()

Eh don't be. Just relax. Trust me, I've been there before. It's not needed. Just be a good signer and have a good attitude!mermaid said:I don't think a deaf person made the shirt...I don't know. The "hear it" means both "yay" and (where I think the problem lies) "hear with ears...but oh wait, the deaf can't hear..." and that's the point of it, to be funny. But if it's making fun, that's not ok.....I'm still confused....![]()

Oh, yah, I'm a big follower of the CI debate. But really wondering if a quote like that would offend the deaf high schoolers I teach and the deaf aids I work with.gnulinuxman said:Oh, and if you want a sensitive topic, try looking here: http://www.alldeaf.com/forumdisplay.php?f=8 for the cochlear implant war...
The Deaf community tends to worry more about the threat of these devices than a four-letter word like "hear"....
Well, there's no need to worry about that. It's an expression, and all my deaf friends know that. I have several of them. I used to be so confused too. Just relax and have a good time. You'll feel better that way.mermaid said:Oh, yah, I'm a big follower of the CI debate. Im deaf and I wish I have the answer but I dont...Im curious have you look up on google about this? I will check it out...cuz Im curious..Well, if you're asking what "let's hear it for ____!!" means, it means "Hooray for ____!!". It is like the pride you were asking about.coloravalanche said:umm thats a good question..i have no clue...Im deaf and I wish I have the answer but I dont...Im curious have you look up on google about this? I emailed this company and ask abt it..

I don't think you'll get a response...most of the hearing world does not care about deaf issues, sad to say. But thanks for all your help! Let me know anything further. And I'd love to know everyone's opinion.
And Mermaid, did you forget that I'M hearing and care about Deaf issues myself?!coloravalanche said:welcome! i should get a response from this link from company about it..hopefully but if not then wait and see...i will let u know if i hear from them...
Mind telling me why hearing world doesnt care about deaf issues? Are you saying when they create t shirts about sign language and they dont care about our issues?
I'm not saying all, I'm saying most. Of course, if a hearing person is at all involved in the deaf world (deaf friends, knows asl) he or she will care about deaf issues. But really most hearing people have little or no contact with the Deaf Community and are therefore ignorant about it.coloravalanche said:welcome! i should get a response from this link from company about it..hopefully but if not then wait and see...i will let u know if i hear from them...
