Hi user Cisco Explorer or Whole Home
(Please not talk about Tivo, DirecTV etc.. on thread, thank you)

I got Cox Commcation Inc. came me for new DVR.. Cisco Explorer 8642 (short called Cisco) is new replace old Motorola DCT6412 HD Dual Tuner (short called Motorola)

Cisco is nice screen clear than Motorola, but I am sad, Cisco's CC! Analog is lousy same Motorola is lousy too, but both nice Dirtect CC.

Motorola turn off CC, use my own Sony HDTV's CC is beauutial than Motorola and Cisco. swtich to Cisco, and Cisco's CC is off, won't work... I did setting on Cisco - 480i and component video, I know HDMI won't work but why component video work CC from Motorola.

I use A/V plug to Cisco, work CC in my HDTV but not nice and blurry on Guide.

help me, any how to use CC and component video in my hdtv's CC but I don't need DVR's CC

P.S.

Motorola had choose text, color, size, both Analog and Direct but Cisco is only Direct, I need Analog

Are you trying to use TV's built-in CC decoder to display CC with signal from Cisco DVR? It may not be possible anymore because Cisco DVR may be all digital. In order for your HDTV to decode CC from cable box, the signal must be analog and 480i or lower. You have an HDTV and it defeats the purpose of getting HD by using 480i or lower.

HDTV's built-in DIGITAL CC decoder is only for OTA antenna or analog CC from cable box or antenna.

Have you tried to turn on CC in Cisco DVR via menu setup screen? If Cisco supports CC, then it should work using any video signals including component and HDMI. Yes, it should work with HDMI. Hopefully Cisco DVR will overlay CC onto HDMI video signal and transmit to the TV as if it behaves like sub-titles from DVD/Blu-ray discs but it should display CC with black background like traditional CC from analog days.

component video is similar as HDMI which won't carry the CC decode to be appear on Sony's display. You need to turn CC from the cable box.

Never mind, sorry

Never Mind, I am sorry,
Techicican is stupid!!

I pull out of DVR, I saw both component video and HDMI !!! I not see it before... why he put both??? I remove HDMI, component video is blank!!! I presss reset DVR, final!! component video is working, I try 480i final!! work CC... NEVER MIND!

but I am sad won'r work between 1080i and 480i
like 1 - 699 and 900 - 1999 self 480i, 700 to 899 self 1080i for only Motorola but Cisco is only full 1080i... GRRRRR

Don't you want to watch TV in High Definition? If so, try this:

1. Disconnect all video and audio cables between Cisco box and TV.
2. Connect HDMI cable between Cisco box and TV. Audio is included inside HDMI cable.
3. Set your TV input to where HDMI cable is connected.
4. Configure your Cisco cable box to highest definition possible or HDMI or whatever via setup screen menu.
5. Make sure you can see High Definition pictures on your TV.
6. Enable CC in Cisco cable box via setup menu.

Hopefully you will be able to watch High Definition along with CC from Cisco cable box.

I don't have cable or satellite but I do know that lately cable/satellite boxes should be able to transmit CC over HDMI cable.

When people say that you cannot watch CC using HDMI cable. That is true because CC decoder inside TV cannot display CC from cable/satellite box. You must enable CC inside cable/satellite box in order to watch CC using HDMI cable.

Good luck.

Peter

you are correct, I know but I don't like Cisco's CC Fonts and Size, it is lousy, Sony HDTV's CC is beautiful, I like it better than Cisco. I want Cisco is disable, Sondy HDTV is enable, I know 480p to 1080p won't support HDTV's CC

I know what is happening here. the explorer sets (new ones) do not allow CC to pass thru so TV can decode. You have to turn it on via cisco explorer DVR and let it do the CC decoding. You should be able to access via your explorer remote settings button. GO to closed captioned option and turn on. simple as that.

What about OTA reception? I was thinking about buying a new Mitsubishi set, looked at one today, and as the salesman was running through the functions, a warning popped up about CC not coming through on HDMI cables. But OTA it should work all right, wouldn't it? But then what issues would I have with a DVR?
