Marty will not pee or poop until he find the prefect spot! And he when he has to poop he will find a spot then spin around like a hurricane 3 or 4 times and something do this 3 or 4 trying to find the prefect spot to place his poop!!
Do people with small dogs go through this too ? Marty's vet keep telling small dogs are very fussy
and the grass blades have to be just right for them before they pee or poop! If I knew Marty had a habit of spinning around like a hurricane I would had named him 'Hurricane'!
He is a funny little doggie! He tried to climb an apple tree today!!

I love your stories about Marty! Sounds like he is now in good health, is that right? Long may he live and love being your baby!

Pippin will do the same thing as Marty in his bathroom habits. We are down at the beach now and there is a lot of beach grass along the area where we walk him. He likes to find the very tallest clump of grass around, and will back into it, lift up one leg, and drop his little present inside the clump. All the while giving us the "evil eye," as if he's saying "What are YOU lookin' at, hmm?? Can't a guy have some privacy??"

Yes they are very fussy! We have a fenced yard so our dogs don't need to have a leash to go out.

Joey wants complete privacy. We know he does go as my husband picks up the yard daily. Otherwise you might think Joe was above all that!

Why didn't you tell me this!! joking! I thought Finlay was fussy ,but Marty take the cake! I wish I could let Marty out alone but that is not safe , my condo has no fence around it. I still love as fussy as he is!!

I am worried that Marty may have to stay on meds for his chronic bronchitis ,
his vet had me cut his med down to every other day and Marty is starting to cough again! The landfill is acting up again too, you can smell the hydrogen sulfide again!! CRAP!! And this will made him cough too!
We went down town today and I took Marty for a walk on the boardwalk and some teenagers girls and boys fell in love with him! There where 3 years girls and they wanted a photo taken with him! I said it was OK, so the girls got down next to Marty and the 2 boys took some photos! Marty is a real lady killer!! LOL! The kids where really nice , it is a shame people are giving all the teenagers a bad rap because of a few, trouble makers!
Marty could end up on Facebook! I told the girls to spell his name right if they put him on Facebook!! We also meet a dog that was part terrier and
mini sheltie , the 2 dogs got along good!

I was looking at a Yorkie as possibly a purchase awhile back, and the breeder told me that they can be trained to a litter box. You use a different litter than you use for cats, but she has hers trained. I never knew that!

Yes, some of the people on my poodle list who are elderly, and/or live in apartments, and/or live someplace with a lot of snow for several months in the winter, train their toy poodles to a litter box, usually placed in a laundry room, sometimes out on a balcony or patio. It makes dog-ownership possible for people who otherwise would have difficulty getting the dog in and out several times a day.

Here's an example of one type that uses a pad of fake grass:

Note the reviews: several people loved it, one person was having problems training her dogs to it.

If you google "dog litter boxes" you will get a ton of hits, including the various products, training tips, etc. Generally it seems to work better for females than males, for obvious reasons. Definitely worth a try for very small dogs.

lol my dog Bryan is similar when it comes to be really picky about where he goes to poop. The more bushier the grass, the better... even better if it's longer blades of grass making it difficult for me to clean up his mess. Gee thanks Bryan! He's not entirely a small dog.. more medium sized maybe? He's about 23ish lbs. Well, at least he pees on command for me. Now if only he'll poop on command... I definitely do not enjoy having to walk him in the heat outside while he hunts around for just the right spot to poop in.

Gosh! I forget how dogs are like this. I remember my old dog was fussy and made me to walk allllll the way to that spot where he would poop. It was about half miles away from my home. No problem with pee but poop. I missed my old furbaby.

many times people with smaller/toy breeds, or people who live in high-rises, will teach their dogs to use a litter box, or fake grassy area in-a-box-thing. The little guys take longer to get bladder control as small puppies, often need to eat more due to higher metabolism - therefore, more coming out the other end.

the one thing that potentially creates a challenge then to help the dog generalize that "bathroom" can also mean: "outside anywhere" not JUST "on-grass/surface-similar-to-what's-in-your-house".

While there are exceptions, dogs as a group tend not to generalize well and they learn by association and repetition. So, the trainer/guardian needs to teach the dog the behavior of generalizing something.

My big guys also tend to search for that "sweet spot" to go in, though you can teach on-cue elimination. I haven't done that because for me I didn't feel the need.

Both of mine will pee on-cue, but pooping seems to be either they have to go or they don't, and nothing I do, say, or reward for has made it an on-cue behavior.

And neither one of them will pee over the other one's place. I had wondered, with two males, if there would be dominance issues. So far each of them just stakes his own claims to particular toys, beds, and bathroom spots, and the other one respects that and likewise stakes HIS own claims.

Always interesting what our dogs teach us, isn't it.

I do enjoy reading and learning so much from you. Marty sounds sweet.

Thank you! yes he is sweet! He love to play 'tug of war' with his leash when I am walking him! I have to careful that he does not bite on his leash to hard or he will rip it!

I did see that on line , you can train some dogs to use the toilet too, but Marty is so small he could fall in! I was thinking of training Marty to use a litter box but I did not want have to flush his poop covered with litter down my toilet. And there is no other way to throw it away, we place to put a trash can outside!

You have to put up one of those folding screen like you women get dress behind in the old cowboys movies! LOL!!

Victoria Stillwell did something like that on one of her "It's Me or the Dog!" programs. This couple was having a BIG problem with their 4 or 5 dogs messing up the whole lawn, so she had them construct a white "potty fence" (sort of a picket fence) that marked off what was supposed to be the dogs' bathroom area.

The people had to work hard to train their dogs to use that area ONLY, but eventually it did work, and made their back yard so much nicer to use when the dog poop was confined to this one out-of-the-way area.

We have a lot of privacy fences in the backyard, and Joe actually has his own short brick wall. He loves it!

OMG!! I hated having to wait for Marty to find the 'prefect' spot to poop or tree to pee on! He will lift his leg to pee then decide it not the right tree or bush and he will sometime go this 3x before he does pee! I will freeze to death in the winter waiting for Marty to poop or pee ,and he never saw snow before!
