James Moore works in the engine shop. He inspects the crank shafts on the engine cylinder blocks, making sure the ball point bearings are where they are supposed to be. Then he puts the baffle plates on and sends the engine off to another member of his team. Though every employee plays a special role in assembling the cars at Hyundai, James is the only one here who is deaf.

"When I first came in," Moore explains through interpreter, Cyndi Love, "I had to tell them my name and we looked at each other's badges, but people didn't realize I was deaf. So I kind of had to tell people to relax and I told them that I read lips. And if that doesn't work, we can write to each other and gesture."

He spent the first 90 days on the job with an interpreter like Love. Now, he's completely independent, much the way he's been most of his life-- since he lost his hearing at age five.

Moore loves the job and his co-workers. "There's an awesome group of people that work with me," Moore adds.

This husband and father of two asks for no sympathy, just mutual respect and understanding.

The Janice Capilouto Center for the Deaf added its congratulations to Hyundai for it's hiring a hearing impaired employee.
