Community leaders, parents and alumni of the school for the deaf and blind in Hampton told legislators that they must keep open a Hampton school for deaf, blind and multi-disabled students.
About 200 people attended Thursday's meeting at the Virginia School for the Deaf, Blind and Multi-Disabled. The meeting was held by an advisory commission studying the issue.
Speakers told lawmakers that parents and students will face hardships if the state closes the Hampton school and transfers the students to Staunton. They said the Hampton school's roots run deep in the area's black community.
The commission took no action but voted to make a recommendation when it meets next month.
