Humans make fish deaf

An increase in manmade sounds underwater makes fish deaf, one U.S. professor says.

Michael Smith, an assistant biology professor at Western Kentucky University, cited U.S. Navy sonar and oceanic shipping as possible noise pollution for fish, which use sound to find their way around and listen for predators.

His study will expose locally bought rainbow trout, silver perch and goldfish to various sound combinations at a special sound booth.

Then tests will see whether the fish have hearing loss. The fish's brain waves will be recorded through electrodes while the fish listen to tones.

"We give a series of pure tones to fish through an underwater speaker, and we increase the intensity of the tones until we detect brain-wave activity," Smith said.

My father told me about all fish were deaf? But, some fish are deaf. But, I not sure, all fish are deaf?

By the way, that very interesting for me.

Yeah, they know by vibrations, even the slightest ones, the fish can't hear you clapping outside the fish tank, it has to be lot of vibrations to make them react. Sea mammals (Dolphins, etc) have ears though.

I don't know about fishes but I know that octopuses, squids and cuttlefishes are all deaf. I like octopuses because they can squeeze into tight spots.

Shhhh.........don't tell anyone about the deaf fish, or they willstart doing little fishie CIs!
