MONTGOMERY - Former Maplesville football coach Jim Hubbert is one of nine people selected to the 16th class of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2006 class, which will be inducted at a March 20 banquet at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery, includes coaches, administrators and an official.

Also selected were George Cochran, Jackie Ferguson, Pat Galle, Don Hackney, Glenn Hawkins, Dan Lewis, Eugene Mason and Jack Ray. Cochran is deceased.

Hubbert Coached for 20 years at five schools. During his 10 years at Maplesville, his team won a state football championship in 1996 and was runner-up a year earlier.

He served a term as president of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association. He also coached in both the Alabama-Mississippi and North-South all-star football games.

"Something like this is really the accomplishment of a lot of people," Hubbert said. "The kids always worked hard, came ready to play and did whatever I asked them to do. I also had assistant coaches that loved the game as much as I did and administrators that gave us a lot of support."

During 10 years at Eufaula, Cochran's football teams won state championships in 1978 and 1984 while compiling an overall record of 92-18-1. His only Eufaula basketball team won the state title in 1986 with a 24-3 record. His 23-year football record is 204-51-1, and his 11-year basketball record is 193-98.

Ferguson's Hazelwood football and track teams won state championships during the same school year on three occasions - 1985-86, 1988-89 and 1989-90. He compiled an overall football record of 166-51-1.

Galle has enjoyed a 37-year coaching career at UMS-Wright where his boys and girls track teams have won 27 separate state indoor and outdoor championships in addition to four boys and girls state cross country titles.

Hackney's 31-year tenure at the Alabama School for the Deaf includes 485 wins, six national championships and many national records.

Hawkins has been involved in high school officiating for more than 50 years. A founding member of the East Alabama Football Officials Association, he also formed the East Alabama associations for basketball, baseball and volleyball.

Lewis spent 30 years coaching at Carver where his basketball teams won state championships in 1983 and 1984. His 39-year overall coaching record is 519-291.

Mason is the winningest coach in Alabama prep basketball history with 919 victories during his 40-year career. He has guided seven R.C. Hatch teams to state basketball championships, the most by any coach in state history to date.

Ray's 13 Wetumpka football teams compiled an 82-40-8 record with undefeated seasons in 1953, 1963 and 1964.
