For home defense against invasion, a gun is best. If you are thinking of garroting or strangling someone from behind, that is not a good "defensive" move. You would have to be able to quietly sneak up and have an element of surprise. That's not the usual scenario in a home invasion. Also, for strangling or stabbing, you have to be in very close proximity to the attacker. Not good. It's best to stop the attacker before he gets within arm's reach.

Home defense does NOT mean training everyone in your family to become commandoes, or amateur Steven Segals.

Amen to that Reba, and that is what I was trying to say, stop the attacker before he is within arm's reach, better to have a gun and yes, I certainly would not want the family to think they are commandoes or Steven Seagals at all. Just simple realistic and life saving brutal tactics that work in real life. I agree that a garrotte is more for a wartime action than for in a civilian self defense situation and it is always terrible that criminal home invasions do unfortunatley happen. I pray that does not happen either and that really would not be a very good situation at all. It could be something as simple as the kids coming to say " Dad and mom , the bad guys are here " then the parents take positive action to protect the kids. God Bless .....
