How to talk to the Vocational Rehabilitation People to Pay for my Tuiton

marry PFH

Like the great unwashed mass of students you will probably end up going for a student loan. Your college financial aid dept would be able to get you better rates than a bank. You may need your dad and/or the evil stepmother to cosign.
An alternate would be to appeal to PFH as the richest ADer

Well, the financial aid laws may have changed since your time. Right now, financial aid laws don't see you as independent unless you're 24, going to grad school, married, have your own children, OR in armed forces.

So I'm 20 years old and claiming as indepndent on tax forms isn't going to do a shit for fin aid....unless I really ask for "dependency override", but that usually happens in extreme case and in a case of involuntary dissolution of family support....like, move out and support myself FULLY, and provide documentation that i have involuntary dissolution of family support, so....yeah, it's just that tough.

God, FAFSA and fin aid laws are stupid.

Yes, I have similar situation about got away from my parent so FAFSA made me to work out with my parent and ask them to send their income so they refused at few time so I made hard convince on them so finally, they will submit their income every year until I turn 25.

I will be 23 years old in December.

For VR, yes, they will pay your college but depends on criteria are you going to meet, especially able to meet the minimum GPA, cover/not cover remedial classes, limit the major change, etc and criteria is varies by state so check with VR office in your area.

Good luck with college. :D

If MIT is a smaller school the classes would be smaller, right or wrong? Would that help your case having smaller classes . Could get someone from
MIT or a hight school teacher to vouch for you saying that you a very good candidate for Vocational Rehab to help? I think you should try to find as many people that can to say you are an excellence candidate for Vocational Rehab. to help . I know money is really tight with some Vocational Rehab ,so you need to really sell yourself . I will be rooting for you!

Wow, that is a very good suggestion. In my freshman year, I was in this special program called Experimental Studies Group, which has a SUPER small classes taught by MIT professors, which is unique at MIT. An average class size was about 5-10 people, no more than 15 (but 15 students classes aren't very often). It was definitely awesome as you get to know professors on first name-basis and bond tighter with other people, although the class materials and homework are much much harder and faster paced than in the mainstream equivalent classes (it must have been a miracle that I managed to survive those classes and its evil homeworks). Nearly all of my classes were in this ESG program and I did the first semester well. I'm thinking about continuing being in ESG once I return to MIT, most likely for biology and mathematics. So yeah, I'll mention this with the VR.

As for high school teachers, I have plenty to vouch for me. I can have one or two MIT professors of mine to vouch for me as well. I could give them their contact address just like that when I meet the VR people?

So, the rules are the same across USA, no matter what states? Is there any online version listing out those rules that I can look at?

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. The criteria is pretty consistent, but the way funds are distributed isn't. That will vary tremendously from state to state. That is why one state may offer more tuition assistance, and another state offer none.

Check with your financial aid counselor. You can petition to be listed as independant.

my parents never filed FAFSA and refuse to =/

I'm in the toughest financial situation possible, which is why I'm looking into VR. =/

Ouch, I'm sorry that I don't read whole thread.

I'm suggest to talk to your parent and try work out with them, tell them about FAFSA require parent's income to be submitted until you are 25, if not so it will not let you to use Fin Aid, VR so make situation looks delayed, worse and ugly.

If not work so talk to Fin Aid, FAFSA or VR in tough way for dependent overridden.

it has been my understanding that vr has turned down students at ntid because of parents income level. your age is also a factor since you would be classified as a dependent on your parents tax filings. there are a ton of other federal and state grants out there though. could help to talk to the schools financial office. they usually can dig up a few hundred dollars in grants.

If deaf students who live on SSI so our state VR will cover all of tuition, regardless on parent's income.

In here, under VR, clients are dependent until 23 years old, just 2 years earlier than FAFSA so I will be independent under VR in December.

They have specific criteria that has to be met in order for them to do tuition assistance, and the schools to which they will reimburse is also limited to a few schools. Basically, you will need to show them that schooling is necessary for you to maintain employment and become gainfully employed. The criteria are not set by the local VR offices, but are federal standards.

and state too.
