How much is my computer worth?

I have a Dell XPS i'm trying to sell but want to get a fair price for it, I'm planning on buying a new computer soon. My Dell is a liitle old technology but it's need good condition. So here are the spec's

Why are you looking to buy a new system?!

Your computer is worth roughly $500 - $600

You could save your money and just upgrade the system. maybe upgrade the video card to something with DVR features (or just ad a DVR card for watching/recording TV) If it dosn't have a PCIexpres slot it won't be a huge upgrade but you can get a lot of the feauters you might want (multiple monitors etc)

you've got dual SATA hard drives in a Raid Array, you're not going to get any better performance than that. aditional hard drives are cheap.

The only other thing that might be worth upgrading is the operating system. The only thing "better" what you have is WinXP Home media edition 2005, which is only available as an OEM install. You can get legal copies from a lot of online retailers but it's a replacement to winXP pro, not an upgrade.

I was wondering how much my computer is worth. If you could tell me, that would be great. If you are even interested, give me a price that you would buy it for. Thanks. Here are the specs.

ASUS A8V-Deluxe MB
AMD Athlon 64-bit 3000+ 939 Processor
120GB SATA Seagate HD
120GB SATA Hitachi HD
ATI x700 256MB AGP Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card
NEC 16X DVD+-RW
Lite-On 16X DVD+-RW
Sony 3 1/2 Floppy
Lian-Li Case
Logitech DiNovo Wireless Keyboard Set
NEC MultiSync LCD 1760V Monitor Black
Gateway FPD1760 Monitor Silver
Thermaltake Dual-Fan Power Supply

You prossesor runs at about 1.8ghz, decent size HD 240gb al together, your video card new is around $200, Sound card new is about $70, both of your DVD drives are around $30-50 and monitor is around $500 new, $300 for the keybord set add up everthing and that comes to around $1,500 but i would say all in all it is worth $1,100 have fun and make sure to buy and sell resposibly!

With a 1.8ghz prossesor it would be choppy either way so i would say if u do go ahead and get a new video card get a new prossesor in the prosses hehe.

I would keep old PC and get new one, then tie them together though networking. I ended up have 4 PC tied up. :-D

The origonal poster with a 1.8 ghz cpu would be justified in considering an upgrade but I was asking the question in responce to 34skyline's comment, who has a 3ghz P4.

Still... cheaper to keep old PC and get rid of Windows and install Linux... viola! no viruses, no worries...

Just buy a new Apple computer! No virus! No worries. :dance2:

I realized that 34skyline and type_r12 just posted to sell their computer without an introduction because their history post is only one.

34skyline could keep the old computer and buy the Apple computer. Perhaps, 34skyline will find more interesting on Apple.

On Apple, he/she could make his/her own programs. Here are three examples:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11/
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/windows/
http://www.apple.com/macosx/developertools/

You can do the same thing with linux. You can also write programs for Windows.. There are free C++ compilers for windows... though the're not perfect. But instead of writing software for one OS why not use Java to create your apps and make them cross platform.
My point is that you don't need a particular platform to write your own programs.

I have been using Mac OS X few years. I dont see problem with my Apple computer. Hard to hack inside Mac OS X. Remember Apple is small world does not concern virus. So far since they still not find single of virus found yet. Apple team realized that virus is not ACTUAL virus. It is sort of codes that bother your computers.

Your computer prolly has 2 bucks worth of gold in them.

I don't know alot about how much is a computer is worth but I looked around and Dell is selling a refurbished Xps Gen 4 3.6 for $1129 and this is a used computer. But my computer has more stuff then this xps thay are selling on dell outlet. Dell computer has HD size is 160, I have 500 GB, 2GB of ram and it has all the warrenty that is good for the next 3 more years but the one that dell is selling doesn't come with any warrenty. So I think but not for sure my XPS is worth more than $600 dollars. I'll just keep on looking . The reason that I'm selling the XPS because I want to get the New PowerMac Intel once it's released later this year. To show you proof I saw this this price here is a link to dell outlet centers.

http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnline...line/en/InventorySearch?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

I stand by my estimate of $500-$600, I just came up with the number with a general idea of what the parts are worth, tonight I did some actuall lookinng and confirmed what I came up with.

I ignored the wireless keyboard. it might be expencive but it's of little value to some people including myself. The computers I'm using as an example are similar but not identical but gives a general idea of what they're worth.
Also, your printer is a Dell, I consider it worthless.
I also ignored the warrnty that adds some value if you can transfer the warranty to the new owner.

computer A:
3.0Ghz P4 (single core with HT) (3 yr warrenty on the CPU)
750GB SATA hard drive
The motherboard has on board video which is adequate, but it also has an AGP slot so it's upgradeable. the onboard ethernet adapter is only 100BaseT but who needs Gigabit ethernet in their home?
2 GB of ram.
16X DVD+/-RW drive
Windows XP media center edition 2005.

Total price: $820.95 There was a discount on the hard drive for buying the CPU and hard drive together, and the RAM has a $35 mail in rebate.

Computer B:
(I found a good deal on a barebones kit which came with the following:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
160GB SATA HDD /
512MB DDR PC3200
--
Add the same two gigs of ram from earlier
16X DVD+/-RW drive
and no onboard video for this motherboard but it has PCI express, so for $99(after $35 rebate) I found this
XFX GeForce 6800 Xtreme/256MB GDDR3/SLI/PCI-E/Dual DVI/HDTV/ -- there may be better cards but I just found a nice mid range one as an example.
Windows XP Media center edition 2005

Total: $748.95
with this set up you have an extra half gig of ram that can't be used (only 2 ram slots in the motherboard) so I say sell them to a friend and use the money toward more hard drive space.

So there you go. I still say your computer is worth $500-$600.
I diddn't include shipping of the parts because in both cases it would be about the same as the cost to ship the entire computer.

------------
Edit: I looked again, if you want a 3.6Ghz CPU on the first one add $230, so the computer is worth more than $600. I wasn't aware there was such a price jump for just 600mhz in clock speed.

Oh, I am jealous that Apple is selling new PowerMac Intel computers. Mine is Apple G5 dual 2 desktop without Intel. I heard that the Intel is much better, etc. I am still very happy with my computer. Good Luck selling your computer.

Put your ad on Craig's List website with no service fee. (Make sure you accept money order.) Do not sell your computer to a foreign buyer! Even, don't send an email to a foreign buyer otherwise, you might receive many fake spams. A few years ago, I made a mistake asking a person from Russia for info thru eBay email.

If I were you, don't use on eBay because of the two separate fees (insertion fee and final value by percent & plus 3 % if over $25 or over) so it is worthless. eBay is a sort of "robbing" your profit. My friend recently quit on eBay, and she had been selling her items for 9 years. She realized that I was right a few years ago. Whatever is best for you to sell it to someone on the internet.

Make sure that you get an Apple LCD monitor like 20 inches or 23 inches. I think non-Apple LCD monitors would be fine.

So I think but not for sure that my XPS is worth more, just push this in (System Identifier: 09WEG96Y) it will directly take you to this system. Remember these are used computers.

All that proves is that Dell sells over priced crap. Dell's profit margins are very thin on their low end budget PCs but wow, aparently they realy gouge you if you want something better.

In my above example I found parts to build my own computer, for a 3.6Ghz P4 (same CPU as your example), 2 GB of ram, 750GB hard drive, a legal copy of winXP, and all other needed parts I came to about $1100. plus shippnig. You may want to upgrade the video so add an optional $100 and you've got a computer thats right up there. (plus there's no AOL or McAffee crap pre-installed, it'd take me the same ammount of time to remove worthless crap software as it would to assemble a brand new computer)

I'd never pay more for something used than what I could get new, so to me, or to any one who could build their own computer, your Dell is worth less than $1000.

Maybe your right I just don't know how much it's really worth, I hardly used the Xps and it's just sitting around getting dusty, and also talked to dell and thay said that if I sale my computer the warrenty still apply's and their warrenty is good everytime when I had a problem thay alway's send a tech if we can't fix it over the internet threw Dell. Believe it or not I used to have a home built computer but it kept messing up and I just got tired of buying parts for my home made computer I just decided to buy one that's is already done and it will be under warrenty. I guess I just try my luck and sell it. Thanks for your info on how much it's worth, I just needed to know how much I have to sell it for to get rid of it and get ready to buy Apple Intel PowerMac later this year.
