Cochlear Implant surgery and how much does it cost afterwards, like with keeping it up to date etc? Is this covered by medical? I'm in British Columbia btw, not in the states.

Ask Neecy here cuz she knows all about this stuff and she's near you, too. She'd be a GREAT and HONEST help to you.

It's generally covered by the socialized health care in Canada....BUT, you may find it really hard to get, since countries with socialized health care tend to be strict about who can get them or not. I remember even reading about how a little KID was going through a tough time trying to get one. His parents brought him over to the states, and he got one here.

If I recall, if you have health insurance, it's covered. ONLY if you are reccomended for it. (I believe)
I do know how much it costs to get it...$50,000 canadian.

In all honesty, I don't know the full amounts because I lucked out being selected as a part of Cochlear's Nucleus trials, so everything was paid for by Cochlear.

Whereabouts on the Island are you? I'm in Nanaimo.

I would suggest you contact Dr Sipke Pijl at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver and arrange a consultation with him and Dr Brian Westerberg.

I've known Dr Pijl since he was an intern, back in the early 1980's and he is one of the most amazing people I know.

If you have any other questions feel free to pm me.

Hey! Nice to meet you! I am in Courtenay. I saw my
ear specialist this week, and he is setting up an appt to
see Dr. Westerberg. I've already been to St. Paul's a couple
of years ago but I still had too much hearing and did not
see Dr. Pijl at that time. My ear specialist worked with
Dr. Westerberg for a month and this summer is going to
work with him for a year. He says Dr. W is very good.
I'll pm you. :)

Wonderful news - you'll like Dr Westerberg. Let us know how your consultation goes!! Crossing fingers for you.

Thanks Neecy! :ty: It would be great to meet you
one of these days. We're only an hour apart!
