How much does a DJ really impact a wedding reception?

My fiancé and I are planning our wedding and are deciding whether hiring a professional DJ is worth it or if we should create our own playlist.


I've noticed that many couples mention the DJ does much more than play music. They help with announcements, keep the reception on schedule, manage transitions, read the crowd, and create the right atmosphere throughout the evening. Some companies also offer extras such as photo booths, lighting, and 360-degree video booths, which can make the event more interactive for guests.


For those who have already had a wedding, what was your experience? Did hiring a professional DJ make a noticeable difference? What should couples look for when choosing a DJ service, and what mistakes should they avoid?


I'd appreciate any advice from people who have planned a wedding or attended one recently.

I was the DJ for my brother's wedding last year. It was a lot of fun, and having a DJ even just for the music is a lot better than hooking your phone up to the sound system and playing your playlist from Spotify, they make great transitions and make everything alive and yes, they do read the crowd, so if they play a song and nobody's responding they can move on and play the next one quickly without the awkward random song cut you'd get by skipping the song on Spotify. And yes, they also help with announcements, and scheduling and all of that as well. For making your own playlist: If you want a DJ but there are also songs you really want to play, you can usually give your DJ a list of Must-Plays and Must-Not-Plays and they can work with that as well. When my brother's wife scrapped my whole playlist and gave me her own, it was a bit frustrating from the DJ side, so I'd go with more of a "hey, you GOT TO play these songs" and they can usually work that in. Pro Tip, latin music really helps crowds get into it, it doesn't have to be every song, but a classic Daddy Yankee here or there also helps get people moving.
