Find out if someone is in the bathroom stall? Us hearies knock and ask if anyone is inside, and if there is - they usually reply "occupied" or "taken". How does that translate to deaf culture?

How do you get the attention of a deaf group outdoors? I know indoors you can flick the lights, but what happens when you're outdoors and cannot control the lights?

Just curious...
 
Umm, look under the stall for legs? Same as for hearing people. :laugh2:
 
I look for legs where i can. If not, i knock, then try the lock. If it's locked, it's busy. But I'm also a girl and we always go to public restrooms I'm pairs ;) so my friends will hear if someone is foolish enough to not lock their stall and announces their occupancy.

Ha, ha! But I'm pretty sure I mean when you CAN'T see under. I work at a health club and today both family-style locker rooms/bathrooms were locked. It didn't appear that the lights were on (motion sensors), but I wondered what would happen if you couldn't hear a knock. I am HOH and may need to know some day.

And what about the outdoors thing?
 
Outdoors? You mean camping? Never go anywhere without room service! :giggle:

You'll adjust just fine. It's not like the hearing people can hear over those hand dryers with hurricane force winds. :P

I would lock the door. It shouldn't matter if I can't hear you knock. Surely you won't try to force your way in my locked door?
 
I flush down toilet to make sure s/he can hear that I'm still in restroom. N' I sometimes use my voice told her, "Hey, I'm here!" When she tried to open my door; also, janitor asked, Anybody there? That's why I keep my ha's on at all times.

For me, it's very simple. I don't use public restrooms. I never have and hopefully, I won't ever have to. Too many unclean restrooms and you never know what kind of germs are lurking there.
 
Well, it's not rocket science to know when a bathroom stall is occupied....look for the legs/feet...then again, if you try the door, it's probably locked...if not, then the person on the toilet would push the door back at you...

I refrain from using public restrooms also, but whenever it's necessary that I've got to go, I never sit completely down on the toilet seat....and spread toilet paper over the toilet seat....If there is no hot water or soap to use after, then a hand sanitizer comes into play....carrying a small bottle in ur purse is at times a very good idea.

As far as a large group of deafies outside in the open...just getting into their line of view, even waving ur arms would get their attention....

It's a legitimate question out of an experience I had today. And those who are as RUDE as you are are the true a$$holes. By the way, it's "as you are" and not "as you're".
 
Let me just ask this...I thought it was 'rude' to flick the lights when trying to get the attention of a Deaf person. Because it scared them or something. Its better to wave or grab attention that way, other then flick the lights.

I would flick the light if I want everybody's attention (as in deaf school, deaf event, etc.) If it is just one person, I would go to that person or wave at that person (if another person next to the person I want, saw me and he/she can tap the person I want for me.)

Outside, I would go to the person. If I want everybody's attention, I would wave my arms and sign "watch me". The people who saw me first would alert the others.
 
As for the bathroom, I keep my hearing aids on and my stall door locked. If the lock is broken, I would go to another stall. I would collect the tolet paper from other stall if the stall with working lock has no TP.

Yes, I do check under for the legs or push at the door.
 
You know deaf people lose hearing, so they increase 25% of other senses each such as visual, feel, taste, and odor. So ... I could see through someone sitting in the potty box. :lol:
