Houston votes for lesbian mayor

people shouldn't be taking things like that into consideration..its not like shes gonna make ppl be lesbian ...good for her!

I was surprised too! I would have thought that a city in TEXAS would have definitely ruled against it. Good to hear that things are changing! :)

And I agree with Alicia. Things like that shouldn't matter in the first place.
 
I'm so proud! Loghead, Houston is a very diverse city and largely Democratic. There are areas which fit the stereotype that many people have, but overall it's a fairly progressive place.

Texas isn't bad, man. :)

Dallas has communities that are GLBT friendly, so is Austin.
 
That's great and I agree with you, Alicia.
 
Foxrac is correct. However, Texas is a huge state and most of it is rural. Outside the city limits things are very different.

Interesting to say, some rural and small town in south are friendly to GLBT, depends on location.
 
She works for city hall for many years so she deserves to run for mayor for this 4th largest city of the usa. I don't care of her lifestyle as long she takes care of this city.

Who ever dislike her life, don't make any comment in this forum!!!
 
Foxtrac, we haven't been hanging out in the same rural haunts. I've spent most of my time in East Texas and South Texas. :wave:

Ahhh OK. I've never been near that area of the States, so all I know is from what I've read or heard (I've got a friend that lived in Houston for about 5 years). I'm assuming that there are worse parts of the South. Alabama or Arkensas?

Neither of them, Alabama isn't bad but just boring place due lacks of deaf communities.

There's homophobia in anywhere so not limited to south.
 
If Austin elected a gay mayor, it wouldn't be a big deal - after all Austin has ALWAYS been liberal and voted for equal rights for gays.

But Houston is a different story for a couple of reasons - Houston literally sets a trend for smaller cities. The changing beliefs, the changing attitudes of Houston will also be the same in other major cities considered conservative.

And the fact that Houston, being the 4th largest city, elected a gay mayor where the gay population is actually quite small - estimated only 60,000 out of 2 million people so it's surprising that Annise Parker managed to become a mayor despite not being secretive about her partner.

She is Houston's first "openly gay" Mayor. In the 80's Houston had a Mayor named Kathy Whitmire......She was not openly gay but she was assumed to be a lesbian by most in Houston. I believe she was a 2 term mayor.

Also.....smaller towns in Texas are known for their gay populations as well. Midland/Odessa (Dillon if you watch Friday Night Lights) has a noticable lesbian population as does Waco South of that I have no idea.
 
I dunno about Texas but Ashevillie, NC is a very GBLT friendly town. I've been to it. Mountains are beautiful there. I used to have a terp who was gay himself and he has complained that the Charlotte area is not very GBLT friendly. He's in Canada now.
 
And this is news because she is a lesbian?

My point is - if it *really* does not matter, it wouldnt be news. But someone took the time to care and announce it.
