Houston County Schools Honor Deaf Interpreters | WMGT-TV | News, Weather and Sports for Macon, GA
Christian Cobb, has a normal routine like most 1st graders.
Read a book, complete the in class assignments, and at some point during the day, head outside to get some lunch.
However, his conversation differs slightly, as he and his teacher Carla Berghult, go over readings in sign langauge.
It's the teacher interpreter team at lake joy Primary, that make a big difference in deaf kids lives.
Interpreter Denise Potts, said, "Sometimes it is the only communication they get so I feel like your part of their lives by talking to them, and getting on their level."
Denise and fellow interpreters say helping Berghult, helped make them better signers and better understand the children.
Since Carla is also deaf, it makes things easier for hearing impaired students to be drawn to her.
The deaf students only make up a small percentage of the student body here, but have a huge impact, and many say kids like Christian, aren't too different than the rest.
Potts said, "They're just like everyone else here, they just can't hear as well."
